Disney's Osprey Ridge golf course closing in August as part of the Golden Oak sale

I think it's somewhat of a smart move by Disney, the golf industry is hurting right now and a lot of courses are struggling, and id be willing to bet of all disneys courses osprey ridge was doing the worst. I'm sure it will still be open to the public, there's no way 4 season would be able to keep it open just by having it open to residents of golden oak or hotel guests. Unless they do a ton of outings

Indeed, Walt Disney World was nicely developing into a true world-class resort - now its all about theme parks and little else. Not everyone wants to be a park commando. As hard as it is to believe, some people aren't even interested in theme parks at all, but they might well change their mind when the can visit a resort which offers golf which appeals to dad, shopping and a spa that mom likes, plenty for the kids, and then these "parks" which the family can experience together (and probably be pleasantly surprised).

But Disney's real "best kept secret" was always that you could go horse-back riding or take a fishing excursion at WDW. The public therefore saw the place as being all about parks and characters, and a lazy, unimaginative Disney management badly out of touch with its customers simply sought after the lowest common denominator - the theme park commando (for lack of a better description).

I just don't get how a team of executives who fundamentally don't understand their own product or customers are supposed to effectively manage the company. But that's another topic.

I agree. I think Disney has always had the equal to Harry Potter and Universal in the fact it offered a more complete resort experience. My family always does archery and the mini golf courses and next year I think we are going to even go horse back riding. You cant do anything like that at universal but yet Disney just lets it go to waste.

I would rather have a new area: Game Central Station, Pixar Place, Heroes vs Villians, heck even a land devoted to the old black and white toons where everything looks right out of them (grayscale and all with a mix of new tech) in place of the golf courses.

Side track...where is the archery at WDW (outside of the old queue to meet Merida)? I love to shoot. I'd love to take the kid to do it...

Ft. Wilderness. I know this because I was looking at going horseback riding and I had dig around for it. It is not front and center on WDW website.

Neat! I was already planning a fishing trip out there for us...maybe I'll toss in some horseback riding (she REALLY wanted to do that last year when we went to the Hoop de Doo) and archery!

Thanks!

No, it sounds like pandering to the LCD.

I should have expected as much from someone who has Stitch with his up in the air for his avatar.

Stay classy!

So family time in unique parks with experiences (with absolutely no existence and purely in a conceptual off-the-cuff) at a resort that is known for character, story, interactivity and was started with a cartoon character is pandering to the LCD? Judging from your ironic avatar, your chakra may be out of line and you could stand to connect with your inner child. Stay grumpy.

Maybe you should relax your mula bandha? :D

I will certainly go play the course soon, just in case. To jump a bit into the fray, Walt Disney World, in order to stay a world class destination resort must offer a variety of experience. It is not just a golf resort, neither is it just a theme park resort. The resort needs both of these components, plus lots of others (mentioned throughout this thread) to maintain its Vacation Kingdom status.

Wow, that was the biggest unnecessary prick post I have ever seen on these boards. Nice one elitist scumbag.

You know what, you are right. I was out of line and what I said was rude and obnoxious. I am sorry, @Black Pearl. I have no excuse. I get passionate about WDW and I am not sure I like where it's going. This whole golf course thing is just a reminder to me that this isn't WDW I experienced as a child.

Again, I am sorry for what I wrote to you, Black Pearl.

Hmmmm, golfing, mini golfing, water parks, boating, horseback riding, spas, fishing, etc has always been in addition to the theme parks. I know for a fact a dad who went for the golfing while the wife and kids went to the parks.

All this in addition to the shopping and convention space, the ability to hold large draw events like marathons. This is all what WDW were meant to encompass.

But, I have a question. When did Disney stop running their own coarses?
