A long-lost Disney animated project is firmly back on the roster, as The Snow Queen becomes Frozen, and gets a 2013 release date...

Published on Dec 23, 2011

Long-time followers of Disney animation will be only too aware of the number of years that it’s been attempting to bring The Snow Queen to the big screen. Based on the story by Hans Christian Andersen, the film came closest to fruition just over a decade ago, with plenty of work being done on it (and artwork has since appeared online), before the project was shelved around 2002.

Then, when Disney revived hand drawn animation with The Princess And The Frog, talk of The Snow Queen resurfaced. The chatter then was for the film to be a hand-drawn project.

Still, when we spoke to composer Alan Menken at the end of 2010, he told us that “Snow Queen is not happening”, adding that “that could turn around like that”.

And turn around it has.

Walt Disney Animation has confirmed that The Snow Queen will now be known as Frozen, and it’s scheduled the film for 2013. November 27th 2013, as it happens, and it’ll be a 3D release.

Our best guess is that it’s no longer a hand-drawn production, and is likely to go fully-CG, but Tangled proved that might be less of a problem than some traditionalists may think (although personally, I’d love to see The Snow Queen as a hand-drawn movie).

The article also has what looks like a concept sketch of the Snow Queen herself. Looks awesome! I'm really looking forward to this movie (but I hope it'll be hand-drawn, not CG...)

Ugh, just call it "The Snow Queen!" Calling it "Frozen" is not going to make it "hip" in any way shape or form.

Yes, I too would prefer it be called "The Snow Queen". But of course you know why they're calling it "Frozen". "Tangled" was a surprise hit, and so I guess now Disney thinks it's got a winning formula, at least as titles go...

But I do hope that "Frozen" will be a much better movie than "Tangled". I'm happy for "Tangled"'s success, but I really didn't care that much for it. It had too much of a Dreamworks flavor for my tastes. (Not that I dislike Dreamworks overall. I LOVED "How To Train Your Dragon" and really liked the first "Kung Fu Panda". But I really want a Disney film - especially a Disney fairy tale - to have a classic Disney feel and look. I sure hope that's what "Frozen" will turn out to be. AND that it will be a musical, at least.)

Actually, WDWmazprty, that article appears to be incorrect. There was apparently some confusion as to just what "Frozen" was about. It's now being reported from various sources that "Frozen" is NOT the Pixar dinosaur movie, but the WDA Snow Queen movie. Here's another article about it from IndieWire: http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplayl...r-3d-mystery-pixar-movie-now-titled-frozen-3d

Quote from the article:

Meanwhile, remember over the summer when Pixar set the date for November 27, 2013 for a mystery blockbuster movie that won't be a sequel? Well, it's now called "Frozen 3D" and it's about dinosaurs. Or not. Seems there is some confusion but we suppose it'll be cleared up eventually

(The previous sentence was struck through and this new sentence has been added)

it's the new title of "Snow Queen," a project Disney have been developing for a while now. The new date bumps the dinosaur movie, which remains somewhere in development.

Right, then I reposted the correction below it; but no matter-at least everyone can see the info.

Here is a ground breaking thought. So hang on tight. Try spending more time worrrying about the actual movie instead of the tittle.

In hindsight its easy to see why Rapunzel was called Tangled. The film focused on both Rapunzel and Flynn. Upon further review, Frozen appears to be more focused on Gerda and Kai. They are the two major protagnoists. The Snow Queen being the antagonist, who in fact if I remember correctly(I read the Snow Queen short stories a year ago) only makes a couple brief apperances. She is more talked about then seen if memory serves.

Kai(or Kay depending on the version) gets slpinters in his eyes and heart that basically turn him into a cold mean, heartless person. The only thing he thinks is beautiful is the snow flakes. So in fact he does become in love with the "frozen" world of the Snow Queen.

Just food for thought. Marketing is gonna name the movie what they want. Tangled was still awesome. Im sure Frozen will be too.
