Disney's Live Action The Little Mermaid

I thought everything revolving around Ariel and Eric's relationship was a vast improvement, and the movie gave both characters more depth and chemistry. You felt a genuine connection between them, where in the original movie it felt more like a crush/infatuation. I also didn't mind them emphasizing Ariel's other interests with the human world other than Eric. Bailey also has an amazing voice, making her Ariel a step up from many other live-action princesses.

Melissa McCarthy wasn't as good as Pat Carroll, but she still did a decent job as Ursula. The "Poor Unfortunate Souls" and "Kiss the Girl" numbers translated best from animation to live action. I also thought the actress playing Vanessa — Ursula's evil alter ego — was excellent in her brief moments of screentime.

The animal characters didn't translate that well to live action, and the underwater effects weren't too convincing — especially in wake of Avatar: The Way of Water. That said, I do think Daveed Digs, Awkwafina and Jacob Tremblay did good vocal work.

The real weak link, however, is Javier Bardem's King Triton. It was an AWFUL performance that lacked the presence and emotion of the original film. As a result of his bad acting, the entire Ariel/Triton relationship didn't resonate.

Overall I'd give it a 6.5 or 7/10. If I were to rank the live-action remakes:

1. Cruella
2. The Jungle Book
3. Cinderella
4. Pete's Dragon
5. The Little Mermaid
6. Beauty and the Beast
7. Aladdin
8. Maleficent
9. 101 Dalmations (1996)
10. Alice in Wonderland
11. Mulan
12. Peter Pan
13. Dumbo
14. The Lion King

Still haven't seen Christopher Robin, Lady and the Tramp or Pinocchio. Probably never will.

This is one movie where, when discussing box office, should probably only center around domestic box office and maybe Europe and Australia. What is happening in terms of box office in Asia and South America is a WHOLE different unprecedented can of worms which needs its own discussion.

I wonder how many other movies have had so many people hoping they would fail because of what they term Disney’s progressive agenda. Not calling out anyone here, but there was a lot of hate on social media.

Thing is that everyone knows this movie will be huge. Other movies with so-called progressive agendas have failed on their own so they didn't need people to pull them down.

I see more, they hope it fails, because they are sick of the remakes in general. Sure some aren't happy about Ariel, but first and foremost a lot of people are just plain sick of these adaptations.

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear. I meant how many movies that opened better like Mario, Ant Man, Fast X. Yes, I know there are other "progressive" Disney movies that provoked the same attitude.

They are this time. Last time they didn't like Strange World for other reasons. There will always be articulable reasons for disliking any particular movie, many of them sincere.

Gotta ask this rhetorical question. I understand the remake fatigue. But I wonder if WB will get the same reaction when they literally remake 10-20 year old beloved live action Harry Potter films in TV form. I guess the question is do other studios get the same backlash over remaking movies as Disney. (at least these remakes are being done in a different style and form).

WB keeps remaking/rebooting Batman. Talk about IP overload.

Sony had Spider-Man rebooted twice.

Is CinemaScore domestic or global? Mermaid seems to be doing great domestically and bombing overseas, which is weird.
Each opening weekend, CinemaScore polls moviegoers directly at theatres across North America, including Canada.

It's nice to know that "Canada" is included in "North America."

It's an interesting question. I'm sure they'll get some flack for sure. Will it be on the level that Disney gets it? Doubtful, since they haven't done it with near as many things. I think they get a pass on season one as long as they stay true to the books. If it starts down the rings of power path, look out, I can't see the Potter fans being all too silent. I'm not a Potter fan, at all, but I think this is way too early for a reboot.

I think other studios do get the backlash like Disney. Ghostbusters 2016 anyone. Disney just has the biggest spotlight shining on it so you just see it more with them in my opinion.

Yea, and that 1st reboot didn't go over so great with fans either. It was good for the MCU though.

Agreed. Superheroes eventually need to be rebooted or recast. But having multiple batmans at the same time? Not a fan. And I love Batman.

Looks like it’s only going to open to 180M global.

Far behind movies like Mario, Ant man, even Fast X.

It’s going to need a strong second weekend.

The good news is even if this flops I think Halle has elevated her career to movie star.

We will be hearing from her again.
That’s higher than predictions. Expectations were for around $100 mil domestically, but it’s looking like it might be $130. It wasn’t ever predicted to be in Marvel territory.

Are we moving goalposts?

Everyone told me this was a billion easy.

It’s doing fine domestic the problem is it’s doing HORRIBLE internationally.

It might still make a billion next weekend should tell the story.

I don't think anyone could have ever predicted what is happening to TLM overseas-at least not until tickets went on sale in China and South Korea. I'd say that one was and always will be an absolute shock-especially South Korea. But it is what it is.
