Disney's Haunted Mansion making room for new ghosts

Horror of horrors! Tourists hoping to experience The Haunted Mansion at Disney's Magic Kingdom are being greeted by a "Closed for renovations" sign tacked to a locked gate.

Disney plans its first major overhaul of the popular Humor-driven attraction this summer, including technology updates and a few new ghosts. The ride closed Wednesday and should reopen by mid-September.

Ride designers are promising revisions consistent with those made recently at other "classic" Magic Kingdom attractions such as the Pirates of the Caribbean ride last year and the It's a Small World ride the year before -- enhancing effects without altering the story or traditional features.

"It's going to be fabulous," said show producer Kathy Rogers of Walt Disney Imagineering.

Yet as with the Pirates and Small World attractions -- considered classics partly because of their roots to legendary Disney designers and even Walt Disney himself -- The Haunted Mansion's loyal following presents both a blessing and a curse.

On Friday, the locked gate at The Haunted Mansion's entrance drew a steady stream of visitors who approached, grumbled and moved on. For the Uhlir family from Lake Zurich, Ill., and the Saar family from Boston, the promise of improvements in three months was little consolation.

"It was a great ride. I really looked forward to it. Now it's closed," said Daniel Uhlir, 12, visiting with his parents, Jeff and Beth, and brother Kevin, 5.

"Why do they have to close it now?" asked Tanya Saar, who arrived with daughter Anastasia, 8.

When it comes to finding a three-month window to close the ride, the logistics are complicated, said Phil Holmes, Disney World vice president for Magic Kingdom.

"Off-season" crowds now are so strong that there is little difference with the summer season, Holmes said. During the summer, virtually all other attractions are open, so this wound up being the best possible time, he said.

Holmes, who was a ride attendant when the Magic Kingdom opened 36 years ago, said he is as fond of The Haunted Mansion as anyone.

He said he understands the consternation of park visitors confronted by the "closed" sign. He said Magic Kingdom got the same reaction when the Pirates and Small World rides were temporarily closed.

"Each time, I think, we came out the other side and people embraced and appreciated the fact that it was refreshed, even improved," Holmes said.

Once again, the Orlando Sentinel dwells on everything negative rather than showing excitement for the changes taking place. They must have former imagineers working as editors for them.

Disney is never gonig to be able to please everyone all the time. By the same token, I can understand being frustrated by one of your favorite attractions being closed during your vacation (especially if you don't know when your next vacation is going to be). And while I understand that not everyone can stand outside of the "gates" and read the Ghost Host's note and think about how cool it will be next time, I can, and I appreciate the hard work being done.

Would I love to snap my fingers an the HM rehab would be done for my trip this month? Yea of course. But for me the ride was nearing unrideable and this rehab was a must. And if this was the best time for Disney to get it done, then so be it, Im just glad its going to get the work it NEEDS. Now I have another thing to look forward to next year!

The article does seem to focus on the negative when in fact this is a HUGE plus.

I don't know if its focusing on the negative or its more of 'its closed and some guests are unhappy about it'.

I don't think the Space refurb will go over well at all. Everyone wants all the rides open for their vacations, and with Space closed for what should be a decently long period, there will be a lot of unhappy guests.

But thats what MK has been dealing with for a long time. Damned if you do, and eventually you'll have to anyway.

So very true. It's going to make the other mountains unbearable in the mornings.

Guest: "Why did they close this ride now? We are here this week and wanted to get on this here ride!"

CM: "I'm sorry sir but we knew that you were coming here this week and we wanted to close it in order to annoy you."

The most important thing in the entire article:

"Off-season" crowds now are so strong that there is little difference with the summer season, Holmes said.

Yeah, that was the standout statement for me too. My partner and I started going to WDW together in 2001. Every year, the "value season" is feeling more and more like the "regular season". It's interesting that they are acknowledging it. Maggie

I decided to put my trip off for a month or two so I can see the new rehab
I don't really think the article was dwelling on the negative. People are just p.o.'d. I would be sad if I didn't know it was closed and saw a big CLOSED sign. I bet the people at the paper can't wait to see the new ghosts either!

It is about time for the haunted mansion to get a face lift, i was just there last weekend and am glad that i got to ride it before they shut it down for three month. The next ride that needs a face lift is splash mountain!;)

I didn't think it focused on the negative. It exemplified a valid complaint (I am sure any CM near that gate hears it a lot). But it ended with Holmes giving a good explanation and has the last word.

At least there will be a "like new" HM open then. I would take that over SM being down for my trip. :)

What shocked me yesterday was the number of people who had no idea it was going to be closed. I heard all kinds of grumbling and complaining.

I photograph refurbs all the time, so I see how people are reacting. Most of the time its the group leader saying "Yes, it closed, will reopen with blah blah blah improvement."

I was just a struck as the writer over the number of people who seemed completely unaware it was going to be closed - that's not typical. It means there's a breakdown somewhere in Disney's communication systems.

Those families who are complaining about HM being closed can always be reminded that NOS Haunted Manison is open.

At least they put up a sign so if parents have young kids, they can show them the sign and explain what's happening without "spoiling the magic".
That sign is awesome!!!

Well I think Disney is "damned if they do and damned if they dont".

People will complain about things getting boring and old and then they refurb it then they get mad when its down.

Id rather come to WDW and miss out on an attraction knowing its getting the TLC it needs.

I guess Disney can always do what the ski resorts and hotels in the Catskills do -close down ever summer for 2 months and fix everything at once.
