Disney's Animal Kingdom Extra Magic Hours now mornings only

I can't remember when was the last time I was at an evening magic hour at AK. I stopped going after while just because usually the MK or epcot would be open the same amount of time and I prefer going to either one instead just because of more rides and stuff as well as having the option of doing certain rides that won't have lines. Going to AK for emh just to do E:E and Dino was a waste then because it would be pack crowded so I might as well do those on a regular day. I enjoyed my night rides on E:E but can't say I liked em better than the day so I won't miss this at all.

That stinks! Not that I ever use EMH since I'm local, but nighttime at Animal Kingdom is so wonderful. Unless they happen to keep the park open late during the summer, or you visit during Christmas week, you never get to experience it.

Hi Figment82....i totally agree! Such a shame to read this today, as i really enjoyed visiting in the evening hours. The Park has a wonderful 'vibe' to it...and the lighting on the Tree of Life and other places looked lovely. You cannot fully appreciate this in the daytime..not by a longshot! It was magical in a sense to be 'in the jungle' in the evening hours...as the Park was a completely different place.

Dang amourous couples....have to go and spoil it all....LOLl....

:p

The park hours at the Animal Kingdom were already extended in March - I'm not sure that eliminating the extra magic hours is really hurting the ability to go into that park.

I was there last week for EMH and kept hearing "there is nothing to do" from guest. They were right as ride wise you have maybe 4 rides total running.

Not surprised. This park would be another PI if it wasnt included as a park ticket. Believe that.

I am truly am heart broken that this park is a giant mess. Night time there was truly unique.

I wonder sometimes that TDO just doesnt care about AK anymore because it does not have to stand up to the other parks(attendence and maintenance)

EMH may have been slow at times, still, this is another blow for AK.:(

Thats awful, I get so much accomplished at AK after dark. Everything has a shorter line and its a lot cooler temperature wise during the evening. Also they did not really have super long EMH that go into the wee hours of the morning like MK.

i had never been to an animal kingdom EMH at night before always used the morning ones. but Magic Kingdom on the other hand nights where you go till 3 am is the best!:sohappy:

Oh I so agree!! And it's actually worth it over there since by that time, usually, most people have left!!

Boohoo - I always look forward to the chance to take some nighttime pictures at AK during EMH. AK really does take on a completely different feel at night. I will miss that.

I'm so sad I never got to experience night EMH at DAK! I really have grown to like DAK over the years, as they slowly add more to it.

If they could close the animal section of the park then keep like Dinoland and what not open longer, it would be so much fun. Another great reason to add Beastly Kingdom, because then they could keep another section open later with rides.

My favorite time at parks is usually at night, it's just calmer and more exciting. Then again I'm a night owl :)

Totally bummed about this news. We actually planned our entire first full day of our trip in August just so we could ride EE at night because we had heard such great things from other Disney dorks. We were planning on grabbing fastpasses first thing in the mornig and coming back to the park to ride EE later that night with our fastpasses!! Like I said super bummed.:brick:

Some might think I'm overreacting, but being able to be at the AK at night is one of the single most important things that I would plan my trip around. Actually I would be willing to say that being in that park at night is one of my favorite things to do in all of WDW. So naturally that had to be taken away. Needless to say I'm not surprised at all......seems to be par for the course.

Big Thunder is nice at night, but there's nothing like Everest when it is pitch black dark. Hopefully I'll get to ride it again that way some time in the future :(

Yea I rode EE about 10 times straight as the sun was going down, one of the craziest sights I have had in Disney. Everything was drenched in orange until it all faded out and then up came the spotlights all over the mountain. It was awesome.

Anyways, check it out.. World of Color with a viewing platform in front of the nemo theater, I don't care if it doesn't coincide with the Animal themeing I just want it on the East coast it looks awesome.

That really, really sucks. The park is so much more enjoyable at night.

Everest is incredible at night. Now you will almost never get to ride it at night.

Your experience must be quite unusual. I've never been run out of a Disney Theme park. They do hinder you from re-entering lands at all 4 parks once you leave that land, but they've never told me I had to leave as I wander around taking late night photos. I respect them for the way they must close and not allow everyone to wander for hours because they have a great deal of work to do to get the park ready for the next day.

This is a shame because as others have said, the park is beautiful at night and, like most outdoor coasters, Everest takes on a completely different personality and mystique after dark.

On a positive note, there will still be a few windows every year to experience the park after dark, because when they close at 8 PM during the Christmas holidays and President's week, standard time is still being observed and the sun goes down very early anyway due to the shorter days of winter.

There are some 8 PM closes during the upcoming Spring Break as well that will give a small taste of the park after dark.

For instance, every day in March from March 6 until March 30, the park will be closing at 8 PM. On March 6, sunset at WDW is at 6:29 PM with "Civil Twilight" (the time when it is considered dark enough to be night, although still not 100% completely dark) at 6:52 PM. This will give at least a 1 hour taste of the nighttime experience at AK and the chance to ride Everest at night.

Unfortunately, just one week later, Daylight Savings Time Begins in the US (it used to begin the first Sunday of April a few years ago), so on Sunday, March 13, sunset is at 7:33 PM and twilight at 7:57 PM. So you would only get "dusky" rides on Everest the last half hour, a near-dark ride the last three minutes, and then the park closes.

Still, if one takes their time lingering in the park like I like to do after closing (the Disney parks have a much "softer" way of closing than many parks, which literally run everyone out 1 minute after close), you can still enjoy the atmosphere of AK after dark as you slowly walk to the front gate - such as, (if you ended on Everest) the Asia section at night, the Flame Tree Barbecue Everest overlook, Discovery Island overlooking the Tree of Life, and the Oasis. Usually it takes long enough to do the "sweep" that you can end up walking through the exit gate nearly 1 hour after the park is "officially" closed.

The ability to do this will decrease less and less as summer approaches and it gets dark later and later. For instance, on the next scheduled 8 PM closes after March - the week before Easter, beginning April 17 - sunset is at 7:52 PM, with twilight at 8:17 PM. By May 1, sunset itself won't be until 8 PM, and the extended 8 PM closing time will be over by then anyway.

Next Christmas season, though, we get the 8 PM closing time (and last year they did some 9 PMs!) combined with a nice, early 5:35 PM standard time sunset and twilight at 6 PM, making this a Prime Time to be at AK for those who love getting night rides on Everest, or just being in the park after dark in general.

Yet another reason why late December is my favorite time at WDW!

Major bummer...
We don't even get to the parks until noon or one when we are on vacation... so it will be hard for us to do everything we want to at AK now...
Majorly suckish :(

That is really too bad but I do understand. We were able to enjoy EMH at AK this past January and it was great. The park is so beautiful at night with the lights and EE was amazing!

You may have misunderstood me. I've never been "run out" of a Disney park either! ;) In fact, I've never been the last guest in one. I was just saying that the Disney parks have a much "softer" way of closing than the typical Six Flags regional-type park (I was saying THOSE are the type of parks more likely to start "running you out" shortly after close). With Disney's "soft close", as long as you stay ahead of the "sweep", you can take your time lingering and enjoying the nighttime atmosphere of a relatively empty, quiet park, being able to enjoy the ambience and music loops, without being asked to leave. When I see there are just a few guests left besides me, I always leave, and have never been the last guest in the park or asked to leave.

So at AK, you can usually stay in the park for almost an hour after closing (depending on how fast the "sweep" goes, how crowded the park is, how many guests stay long in the shops, etc) without being the very last guest or feeling you've "overstayed your welcome". I am more likely to linger when it is dark during this time, since seeing the AK at night is so relatively rare.

One of my favorite times to do this is in the MK during Christmas season. I love lingering at the Hub and then down Main Street, looking at the Castle's Christmas lights, the Main Street lights, and the tree, while enjoying the Main Street Christmas music loop. Eventually I make it up to the train station balcony and just take in all the beautiful sights and sounds. Usually somewhere between 75 and 90 minutes after closing, you can see security has swept all the way to Town Square, and the only other guests in the park are either in Town Square near the tree, in Guest Relations, or also in or around the Train Station. At that time I scoot out of the park and have never been asked to leave!

Epcot has perhaps the softest close of them all, as there are still people dining around World Showcase in the hour after Illuminations. So a lot of times when the weather is nice and cool, I enjoy a nice stroll around the lagoon AFTER Illuminations, looking at the countries' architecture while hearing their music at night. And I still make it out of the park before all the dinner guests do!

AK at night is amazing. I love all the other parks at night but AK has a different feel. With EMSs, the park is virtually empty. Being able to ride everything multiple times with no wait. However, I understand the mindset. It really is empty and the overhead to keep it open likely is not worth it.
