Boy is this flick getting ripped by the critics! Good! The more I hear about it, the more appalled I feel as a fan of the book it's based on.
Apparently, from what I have read, the producer took quite a few artistic privileges trying to make a political statement. I just want to be entertained. That's all.

I came from watching the movie and I didn't see any political messages. The main theme of the movie is about loving and excepting yourself. Which is Meg's journey on the book as well. I thought the movie was fine. It is not identical to the book. If you are iffy on the movie watch it at home later. I think elementary/middle schools are the main audience especially girls.

Wow really. Even the director said that choosing an African American and a white boy as he companion was part of the political statement. She also said that she didn't care if the movie made money and that the statement was more important.

The film was borderline unwatchable. I thought it was awful.

I’ll be honest; I didn’t think much of Black Panther nor this. The best film of 2018 so far is Annihation, followed by Thoroughbreds.

There are two types of movies, those that go after box office and those that are made to sell a specific story. This is the difference between Universal vs Focus Features and Fox vs Fox Searchlight. It is also the reason I would hate Comcast buying Fox more than I think the Disney Fox merger is bad for consumers. The idea that Comcast could own the two biggest Art movie distribution companies is scary. Disney says they will keep Fox Spotlight and that is good for the movie business because it keeps two very strong companies Focus Features and Fox Spotlight to compete with Amazon's growing movie business.

I take back my thoughts that it could be The Wizard of Oz of this generation. It's not that awful but I just felt that there's something missing and I can't pinpoint what is it so it'll leave a terrible void in me.

Sorry to bump this thread back up after two months, but does anyone know why it was rereleased in over a thousand theaters last weekend?

It's pretty common for Disney movies to get a second wave release plus the move to the second run theaters around the 10-12 week mark. Typically that happens with their animated films, Coco and Moana had expanded theaters around that time but it's normally only adding 500-800 theaters. That is a pretty massive number to expand to but I guess it worked because that's a crazy jump from the previous week.
