Disneyland has a new Fantasmic dragon...

I really would love to see something similar come to DHS, but with the budget and labour for "Murphy", it might be time before it happens...

But it will be worthwhile IF it's ever done. :o

Why bother?

You can barely see it in CA. I was there this weekend, and it was a TOTAL MESS trying to get viewing without waiting an hour.

In Florida, they now close the gates about an hour before showtime most nights -- so you would lose a large part of your day just to get a seat. I really hate the fact that Fantasmic is such a difficult event to attend.

I'd love to see one at our Fantasmic... but there are a few problems for our's..

The current dragon for the DHS Fantasmic comes outwards from the "mountain." The DLR dragon comes up from the stage from a pit.. if we ever got the new dragon, it would have to be either totally designed differently, or have a different design to come out of the mountain...

Plus I have a hard time seeing this new dragon for a very, very long time at DHS.. they don't seem to care for Fantasmic for what it is... (cough::twodaysaweek::cough)

After all the difficulties they've had with it at DLR, I can't imagine it ever coming to WDW.

If it did come, it would probably work for a week, break, and then after that, they would just strobe some lights on it. ;)

I think most likely it would have a different design to come out of the mountain.

I don't know about you guys but.... I'd LOVE to see Ursula transform into giant Ursula with Triton's triton in hand..... way better than a dragon. She could either start at Vanessa like in the movie or normal size Ursula. Black ink smoke could hide her well.

While Murphy looks pretty good, the movement is too slow for my taste. I watched Fantasmic at DHS last Thursday and thought that even though the DHS dragon is pretty much a head on a stick, it moved faster and actually seemed more frightening. Murphy looks too "cartoony" to me. Maybe after time, Murphys movements will be quickened up and he'll (although he's a she-right?) grow on me. I'd darken up the scene while I was at it.

Let me add...even though the Californians put down the WDW Fantasmic, after being jammed into NOS (Times Square style on NYE) to watch the DL version, I'd much prefer a slightly inferior version sitting on a hard metal bench anyday. OK, one more thing about the finale, in my opinion, even with the Mark Twain up against the Steamboat Willie, the visability of the characters is way better at DHS on the Willie. They tend to dissappear on the Twain, and Mickey on a mountain vs Mickey on a mill house, well mountain wins everyday.

Done.

Murphy has has been going through testing/adjusting ever since she made her grand debut. Some of her movements have been altered to be smoother and faster, and just yesterday Micechat reported that the dragon had a much larger range of motion.

and the videos don't do the dragon justice - It is much more impressive when you see it live. I'll never understand why some people prefer the old dragon but I guess that's why you call them opinions, right? :o

It isn't just Californians who put down WDW's Fantasmic. The DHS version is just screaming for a refurb. As far as your issue with the characters disappearing on the Mark Twain..? that's news to me.

I can kinda see that point. Of course, I'm going only by YouTube videos, but even with those, its clear that while the Mark Twain is the more impressive ship, the characters do stand out better and are more visible on the smaller Steamboat Willie.

And I'm still undecided on the new dragon. Again, I'm only going by vids, but I agree that its a bit cartoony and slow at the moment. As things are adjusted, hopefully some quicker and more expansive movements can be incorporated.

Oh, I agree that its screaming for rehab...and as for the dissappearing characters, I meant that the lighting on the Twain is not the best for showing off the characters. The size of the decks create huge shadows on them and until they do the flag waving stuff, they tend to "dissappear" into the shadows at times. They're much more visable on the Willie. Just an observation.

That's the first time I hear that complaint regarding the mark twain and the characters

Aside from the smaller boat in the DHS finale, I'm not a fan of the seemingly lax choreography. I've seen several youtube videos where the characters are not following the choreography and/or making up their own dance moves, including the Robot performed by Donald Duck himself.

Anybody know why this happens? See here and here, and again here. That is something i've never seen happen in the DL show (thank goodness).

curious, when did you last see F! at DL? The entire lighting of the show was completely reworked/improved in a recent rehab (2008, i think?) The finale boat sequence now has giant spotlights on it, as well as a purple wash of lighting. I'm not a lighting expert so i'm not exactly sure what all the lights are called.. but the whole scene is much brighter.

I have said this on other topics, but it applies here.

Life is not to be experienced and judged via YouTube. A tiny, amateur video viewed on your computer screen is no substitute for the real thing. Whether it's a water show at a theme park, your favorite ride at a theme park, or the high school graduation of your child, you shouldn't judge it or substitute it with a cheesy YouTube video.

I love YouTube, don't get me wrong. But I don't watch stuff on YouTube and decide I don't approve of it. You have to take a YouTube experience with a huge grain of salt, and realize it is a pale shadow of the real thing. Viewing the grand Mark Twain with all the Characters on it in real life in the Disneyland Fantasmic! finale' is thrilling and literally spine tingling for those of us that have seen it in real life. The new dragon in real life is simply amazing, and a giant improvement on the old head on a stick thing. Try it, you'll like it.

That said, I suppose I should just link to a decent YouTube video of the Mark Twain finale' at Disneyland for comparison. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDoa67q125M&feature=related

Here's a decent video of the WDW version of the Fantasmic! finale'. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2CC0MpHwoU&feature=related

I worked in costuming at Fantasmic at WDW for a year, so I can sorta explain why in some of the videos the characters appear to not be folloeing the choreography.

In the videos you posted, you might have noticed that the characters didn't have their banners to wave like they usually do. They dont have the banners on nights when its really windy or if there's a problem with one of the banners, either Beast gives up his to the character who doesnt have one or no one has a banner. When its Banner 101, they still move around the boat on like normal, and are supposed to be waving, but some of the characters get really into it & start dancing like crazy.
