Disneyland briefly hits capacity during Dapper Day event

Some friends of mine tried to get to the resort last night and were greeted with gridlock traffic (a la May 22), parking closures and for a brief period, Disneyland park at capacity and closed.

I keep telling people that Friday nights are BAD. Just don't go. The confluence of Dapper Day (which has gotten huge), the 60th, no AP blackouts and HalloweenTime was too much for the resort to handle.

Welcome to the new normal!

What is dapper day?

It's a SoCal thing. Those not from SoCal probably wouldn't understand.

Dapper Day at Disneyland happens several times per year, but there's always one in September. I've heard they tried one at WDW this year, but not many people showed up and the Midwest and East Coast tourists at WDW in their schleppy WalMart jorts and oversized t-shirts definitely don't get it and definitely aren't Dapper. Somethings, like Dapper Day, are meant only to work at Disneyland.

Dapper Day 101: SoCal locals, mostly in their 20's and 30's, dress up to the nines and go to Disneyland for the day. Everyone walks around in their very finest, and promenades and parades throughout the park and checks out everyone else in their very finest. It's not a day to get soaked on Splash Mountain or muss up your hair on California Screamin', rather it's a day to elegantly lean against the railing on the deck of the Mark Twain or sit politely in the Tiki Room and enjoy the park as Walt designed it to be enjoyed.

In the evening the Dapper kids go dancing in Disneyland, or go drinking at Carthay Circle in DCA. Or both. Everyone looks fabulous, that's a rule.

As per the SoCal youngsters of the mid 2010's, they generally wear vintage clothing or vintage inspired looks from the 1950's and 60's. Gentlemen wear suits or sport coats or vests with pocket squares and shiny shoes and pressed trousers and sleek haircuts. Ladies wear fancy frocks and poofy dresses with heels and elaborate hairdos and ladylike gloves and custom made hats and absolutely perfect makeup. It's all very swanky and very fancy. Again, it's a SoCal thing for all the young locals who adore Disneyland USA (and also California Adventure).

As a UK visitor who regularly visits WDW I can see how some demographics of visitor at WDW would be problematic for this look.

I was actually at WDW this spring during Dapper Day and the event did seem to be taking off more this year. That being said, those in Dapper Day gear were somewhat overshadowed by the mainstream WDW tourist.

I am excited to say I have my first West Coast Trip booked for early March. Have been meaning to visit DL all my life, but it's such a hike from Europe. Very excited, the more I think about it the more excited I get.

You heard wrong. Dapper Day at Walt Disney World has been happening for a few years and continues. Dates are planned just as far out as the Disneyland ones.

When I was in WDW in March there was a Dapper Day there I didn't know it what happening until I saw the people there. I looked it up on line and it looked like it was planned well in advance. It was neat seeing everyone dressed up until I went to ride the carousel later that night. They had a planned meet at the carousel at night (I think 8 Pm) and the line was huge it stretched all the way down to the bridge by 7 Dwarfs and Belle's storybook thing. Honestly I wasn't that bummed about the carousel, I just did it later, I was just surprised at the large line!

Getting back to the Dapper Day events on both coasts....

Another reason it might not seem as popular in Florida may be the differences in the weather.

I know I for one would not want to be sweating it out in Florida humidity dressed to the nines.
Much more comfortable weather to do that in California, depending on the time of year of course.

I don't like the way they dress at WDW or DL. What's perhaps more offensive than the trashy WDW wardrobes (guys walking around in wife beaters...really?) are the tasteless DL people dressed like mannequins (legions of guys apparently on Nike's payroll wearing Nike gym shorts with gaudy Nike sneakers and long Nike socks...are they aware this looks stupid?), absolutely no style of their own and females with butt cheeks hanging out.
