Disneyland attendance up, although company struggles elsewhere

Yesterday afternoon Disney held its quarterly financial conference regarding the Second Fiscal Quarter of January-March, 2016. Disneyland attendance has gone up from the prior year's second quarter, which comes as no surprise to anyone who visited the parks this winter.

Spending on tickets (due to dynamic pricing), merchandise and hotel rooms was up at Disneyland for the quarter. Attendance had a "modest decrease" at Walt Disney World however, according to the official report.

This article from the OC Register covers the strong attendance and spending at Disneyland, as well as the financials for the rest of the Walt Disney Company.

Many of my friends are skipping WDW this year for DL.
That resort is still bringing the goods while WDW is a mess.

That, and with so many less Brazilians and South Americans visiting, it's no surprise.

I just hope the downturn in attendance kicks management hard enough that they realize more investment needs to happen and this surge pricing garbage has to stop.

I wish Disney released attendance numbers. I'm really curious what they actually are. Any idea why they don't?

They used to before Eisner and Wells took over. I'm guessing it has something to do with speculation and the stock market. Better to report actual revenue than attendance numbers. Even then they don't break it down by theme park.

More investment? They're probably spending a billion dollars on new things there right now.

BTW, Disneyland has surge pricing.

The parks still need more investment. Capex relative to parks revenue has been at an all time low under Iger. There's a chart floating around somewhere. WDW has suffered the most by far, but there are still gaping problems at DLR. DCA, for one, needs something new to counteract DL. Marvel will help, but even Marvel can't compete with Darth and Elsa.

They started lumping DLR and WDW together for reporting purposes to make sure one can cover for the other. Most of the last few years, DLR's improving numbers have masked the largely flat or worse numbers at WDW.

Sure, they've been slow to add things in Florida, and the flat attendance numbers year after year are probably a reflection of that. I'm not trying to defend WDW, but considering what's being spent right now it stuck me as odd to read that someone thinks they should be spending more.

Sure they are building new stuff, but I think most people are bothered by the lack up cleanliness, upkeep and maintenance to what's already there.

Sure, if that's what's meant by "more investment".

Reality is they should be spending MORE. Especially on their flagship resort. Studios is a joke, and won't be that much better with the two lands they're adding. Animal Kingdom needs more than a land with two new rides. Epcot has numerous issues.

Years ago there was something new added every year. In some cases multiple things in different parks. Now we have to wait 3-4 years for just one attraction...

With WDW being the cash cow it is, the last thing they should do is halt construction. Yes they've been turning Downtown Disney into Disney Springs and they're adding Pandora, Star Wars Land and Toy Story Land, but there needs to be more. If you build it, they will come. Stop, and the numbers eventually dwindle.

But they're already currently building three brand new whole lands, and completely redoing Disney Springs. Don't you think they should see how that all turns out before they keep going and going and going?

DHS won't be much better after they add STAR WARS LAND, one of the most anticipated expansions in Disney park history?

Ok, you are obviously trolling. Bye.

I agree with him/her - SWL and TSL won't fix DHS' problems. It will pack the joint out, but it's a gain of four rides in a park that has already lost a major high capacity attraction as well as big shows. DHS needs more than SWL/TSL to become a fully built park. SWL is a great first step. TSL is, IMO, a step backward and will be of little to no help capacity-wise.

Epcot is just rotting away, and DAK needs more as well. Not to mention all the old decrepit attractions at MK. WDW has been criminally neglected for about 10 years now, and it's going to take a hell of a lot to bring it to where it needs to be - let alone where it should be. DLR is in much better shape.

Let's put it this way, did Harry Potter fix the inherent issues at USH? Sure more people are going to that park but it didn't fix the fundamental flaws in that park and in some ways made them even more apparent. Star Wars will only make the the poorly designed DHS even more of a cluster f* and when people eventually leave Star Wars land and ride TOT, what then?

DHS is one of the worst designed parks I have ever been to, with outdated shows and very little to do. Walking out what will most likely be a wonderful Star Wars Experience will make the rest of the park look even more pitiful outside of TOT.
