Disneyland and Disney World lay off 28,000 employees amid pandemic struggles - OCR/SCNG

I would push back a little on that - they won the PR thing for keeping everyone on by July and the first reclosure - at that point they could have started tiered layoffs if it was already part of the plan. I can't imagine the value cost of keeping them on for 3 more months at 28k x $x (x = the cost of the benefits they were still getting) as a public corp just because.
These layoffs are not just at Disneyland. Walt Disney World now has no mandatory restrictions but there are still going to be layoffs. Why not highlight the specific impact at Disneyland Resort due to it being closed as part of the pressure campaign? Disney will have to disclose the numbers so they could have said right away “x number of jobs are being eliminated specifically due to the continued closure of the Disneyland Resort.”

It’s just mind-blogging to me that people are willing to flush so much down the toilet until we can all feel extra, extra, super, duper cuddly and safe.
Look, if nothing else, the universities and public schools being back in session for weeks now without kids, teachers and college students dying in any significant numbers at all proves the way we shut everything down was a completely moronic decision. To still be championing having society be hiding behind locked doors at the expense of what many people are loosing is borderline grotesque!
Uh, you know schools mostly aren't open in CA right?

Well correct me if I'm wrong but Disney was only paying for benefits, and nothing else, for those on furlough. So not sure exactly where you got your figures from. Can you show your work on how you came to that figure?

That is a terrible take. Kids shouldn't be dying preventable deaths. I do believe we should reopen, but reasoning that only a couple of kids die is not good.

As has been mentioned most school in CA are still closed for in-person classes. Most colleges have outright cancelled in-person classes for the rest of this school term.

I understood the post.

About 28,000 people being terminated, multiply that with what Disney is currently paying on average for Health Benefits, Educational benefits, etc. to figure out how much TWDC is saving by switching from furloughed to terminated. (X being the cost of benefits).

A basic health plan starts at about $100 a month, but that has lots of co-pays, etc.

I'm sorry @Darkbeer1, and I'm usually on your side, but this article is so disingenuous its down right unethical. No where in that article does the author indicate that this affects the entire PEP division leading the reader to believe its hitting only Disneyland.

Got it, thank you for helping clarify.

I've been hit by many layoffs over the years, and have been saved from a layoff. As a matter of fact I got saved from a massive layoff in my company just 3 months ago at the beginning of our fiscal year. So I know exactly how this feels, and exactly what happens at corporations.

When did I say a layoff wasn’t going to happen?

Not all 28k are from WDW (I expect DCL to be hit super hard) but I very seriously doubt Disneyland opening would have impacted this number much. Maybe it would have been 26k instead of 28k. The fact of the matter is that what Disney announced is what many industries are announcing; the bloodbath for aviation is coming up real soon, for example.

I hadn't even thought of the DCL. I also have a feeling they were hit extremely hard. The demand for cruises will probably be extremely low for a long time, especially because of the cruise at the beginning of the pandemic that was stuck off shore and couldn't dock and had to remain at sea full of infected passengers. I don't know much about the DCL or how many ships they have in their fleet but I expect a majority to remain docked even when cruises resume.

Disney currently has 4 Ships, with three more planned. Those three are delayed.

Has councilman Moreno releaseD a statement yet? Is he still painting Disney as the bad guys?

Dr. Moreno spent a few minutes tonight during the city council's COVID-19 update to slam the Mayor and others wanting to reopen the parks.

Basically a political speech claiming that the Zip Code 92805 area will have increased cases if the parks reopen and describing the worse case scenario. There should be news reports tomorrow sharing some of the comments, and the video will be available at Anaheim.net (Item 5).

I’m not talking about what’s going on in California. In the south, and MANY parts of the US public schools have been back for weeks and Universities are open in-person. I’m not aware of any large universities in the south that are strictly online. But the fact that California is still by and large shut down and a lot of the rest of the country isn’t and the numbers aren’t very, if any, significantly different surely proves something guys if you can just put aside bias for a moment.

Actually if you really knew me, or even how I post on this forum, you would know I don't have a particular bias on this particular topic. I've been on both sides of this topic as the data progressed through this pandemic. So I don't have a bias one way or the other, the data is driving my opinion.

As for your assertion that schools especially in the south aren't seeing a rise in cases, well that is just not true. Many communities that have reopened schools are starting to see a rise in cases in kids 5 to 17. Overall kids of that age represent 10% of all COVID cases being reported now. Note it was just 2% back in April and remained relatively low until mid-August. Additionally the CDC in their report from the 24th, a 14% increase in kids has been seen over the last 2 weeks. So the data is there that shows reopening schools is the direct cause of this increase. And note this is also shown as teachers, administrators, and various parent helpers have also become infected.

To bring this back to Disneyland, personally I believe it should reopen and CMs go back to work. However I understand why CA is progressing slowly in reopening various industries such as theme parks.

Thank you!!
It goes a long way when people with your view on the pandemic at least voice that they actually have concern for those suffering from things other than COVID itself.

You’re welcome, but I would wager to guess that others who support careful re-openings and don’t believe the conspiracies also have sympathy for others during this time. I would also assume that all of us have been negatively affected by COVID-19 in some shape or form.

This isn’t an easy time for anyone, but to lose one’s job is an extreme discomfort. I think we all agree that it’s awful.
