So, basically Disneyland is bringing back the old Gay Night private parties from the 1980's and 1990's for gays and Lesbians and doing it all themselves in-house? What took them so long to remember how to do that again?!?

I remember in the early 1990's when I first moved back to California there was a concept called... I think it was either Galaxy Nite or Odyssey Nite (named after the event party organizers who created the events and rented out the parks) at SoCal theme parks. It wasn't a new concept even then, it had been going for at least a decade at that time. The Galaxy/Odyssey Nite was a private party aimed at Gays and Lesbians, where Knott's or Magic Mountain or Disneyland were rented out for the evening and it was a ticketed event only. It was advertised in the local gay newspapers and at gay bars in OC, as this was pre-Internet.

It's funny the things you remember through decades of haze. I now specifically remember reading a flier for the upcoming gay night private party at Knott's Berry Farm as it was posted above a, um, men's wall-mounted bathroom fixture, in the washroom of a gay bar in Garden Grove 30+ years ago. 🤣

So this is just a return to the norms and practices of the 20th Century. Suddenly it's 1960 1990!

I wish these after hours events had more than characters and food. Not that I'm gay though. I've said it before but throwback nite should have things like Star Tours 1987, Captain EO, or Honey I Shrunk The Audience. Instead its photo ops with cardboard cellphones...

Gay Days was always an unofficial event I thought? So they may as well embrace it especially since the company is going to war with Florida over their stance on gays (all while partnering with the anti gay Chinese government).

Anyways, whenever I see it's Gay Days I remember this classic internet video:

Those costumes are absolutely atrocious- like a cross between a six year old playing dress up and Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas.

If I was in charge of this event, I would have gone for the Tuxedo look, but with a rainbow tie for Mickey and Bowtie for Minnie (like what's pictured above).

I’m glad they put in some effort instead of just using the same costumes and replacing one piece of the clothing with something rainbow-patterned.

It’s Pride, not Sunday brunch at a gay-friendly church.

In Disney's defense, the guy's name doesn't bring up good memories.

I'm also reminded of how lackluster the '22 Expo was. After the '21 Expo was cancelled, they really should have just waited until September '23 to get back on a normal schedule that would have allowed them to have a better show with better announcements and reveals.

I'm not gonna lie, as someone who's not normally a meet & greet/photo op person, these hit all my buttons. Seeing vintage Dumbo alone has boosted my serotonin substantially (apparently pulled from the Walt Disney Archives, which is especially cool).

The meet and greet character Dumbo? That is the current costume, but still cool nonetheless to see him out.

Yeah, that's not the old Dumbo costume. That's a new one.

I remember the old one being carpet-like material, or a plush velour. And far floppier and huggable and bigger than the current plastic version.

Here's Dumbo in the park from about the Nixon years...

Ignore me then, I'm parroting misinformation. 😂

So it seems like there is an event every month now hoping that there is one in July going the 5 to 12 and always wanted to go to a Disneyland after hours event

In July, the park is open until Midnight 7 days per week.

They only do these "after-hours" events in the off season on weekdays when the park closes at 8pm, then the party starts at 9pm.

Damn pretty unfortunate was hoping I get lucky and get one of the old ones that they used to do.
