Disney World's Reality Problems

  1. Arendelle is not a real place and doesn't belong in World Showcase. It's not in this world.
  2. Avatarland is not a real place and doesn't belong in Animal Kingdom. Those are not real animals.
  3. Hollywood Studios are not studios. You don't even have a backlot anymore. There are no productions scheduled ever.
I predict someday we'll see the friends statue gone and replaced by Mickey alone or the latest cash cow.

The majority if not all of Disney characters aren't real people and many of those characters movie settings weren't in real places but they reside in multiple parks. The original concept of Animal Kingdom included a full section about mythical creatures and is one of the areas fans most wanted to see be built later. Do I want Arendale or Avatar in the parks, no. But Disney is built around Fantasy so rules of what is real/belongs or not kinda goes out the window.

Agreed. And I really wish they had developed the mythical creatures angle instead of going with Avatar.

I don't agree with #2. Animal Kingdom was always intended to have imaginary creatures in.

Now that I have written this, I has got me thinking, am I a hypocrite for being ok with Avatar, but not ok with Frozen in Norway? Are these two things really that different?

Frozen shouldn't be going into World Showcase, MK is the place it fits.

Avatar, I wish this wasn't being built in AK. Yes AK was meant to have the mythical side and people want it....but Avatar is hardly classic myth, the original concept sounded fab - I know a lot of it ended up being built at IoA instead, but they have tossed that all out now for Potter.

I also hope Star Wars never comes to the parks.....it's not Disney and it doesn't belong. By all means maybe it can have it's own place.....exactly the same goes for Marvel - not in the World please.

Marvel and Star Wars ARE owned by Disney and are therefore now considered to be "Disney." If they go in the parks will Disney attract more guests and therefore make more money? Absolutely! Then they are coming. When...who knows. But they are coming. And if you took everything in every single park and made it Star Wars themed....I would be in heaven!!!

That being said I know there are people that agree with you. All I can say is the only constant in the "world" is change. Embrace it or get left behind because it's not stopping. "Classic" rides will be changing. Maelstrom is just the first. They need to keep the changes coming to keep the people coming and the kids happy. They are the primary (and future) consumers anyways. These Disney "traditionalists" are going to be an unhappy bunch. But get used to it people....change will continue to happen.

Why kill all the original stuff that people like with all that space and all that money. It's Disney and not Universal.

This reminds me of the book that corporate management folks liked to hand out to employees, Who Moved My Cheese? It's all about how change is inevitable and how we should all embrace and adapt to change....

The problem is, the book has a major flaw, it assumes that all change is good, and that change should never be resisted, a message that management would love employees to believe.

The reality is, not all change is good change. Companies have been destroyed because they made bad changes.

I wholeheartedly agree. But regardless...changes will happen. If you stay the same, eventually you stagnate and people get tired of the same old same old and stop coming. Good change is good. But what is considered good change? That my friends is all in the eye of the beholder.

I really can't stand that book.

You hope Star Wars never comes to the parks???? What are you talking about? Star Wars is all over in the parks, they have even dedicated the month of May/June to Star Wars weekends. I know we never like to give up rides that we like ( I did not say love because none of the rides that have been closing are rides that draw people in, they are the "other" rides that help fill the day) but by expanding the Star Wars foot print they are going to make that a HUGE draw for the park. The only thing I am suprised about is the fact they did not do it 5 years ago before they started the referb on Star Tours.

As for Marval, I think we have a while before we see that in a ride form (the merch and Monorail Wraps started a couple of years ago). Uni still has the rights on the rides and with Avatar and the rumored Star Wars expansion I think they will be hard pressed to start another major project until those two are "done".

My last thought, People take the "Studios" part of Hollywood Studio's way to literal. To me HS is all about the movies and TV. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Twilight Zone, Toy Story, Cars, and 50's era glits and glam. Maybe they knew it wouldn't be an actual studio and that's why they didn't call it Disney Studios - Florida.

I wouldn't say you're a hypocrite for that. As others have mentioned, Animal Kingdom had always intended to have an area for imaginary animal creatures, so in that sense Avatar would fit. But the Norway pavilion, like the others in World Showcase, was meant to educate people on the country and culture of Norway. Anything with "Frozen" goes completely against that purpose and so doesn't have any place being added in there. "Maelstrom" fit its intended purpose precisely. It's a true shame for the Disney powers-that-be to be losing sight of that.
