News Disney World Earmarks 80 Acres for Affordable Housing

If you read the article, Disney no longer owns the land and will not own the development.
"Walt Disney World will contribute approximately 80 acres of land in southwest Orange County, Florida, for the development, located west of State Road 429" Did I misunderstand this? It seems as though while yes, Disney will not own/manage this property, they are contributing land to it.

Similar to how Flamingo Crossings Village was built, no?

From the Orlando Sentinel article:

"Tajiana Ancora-Brown, a Disney official, said the company donated the land and will not own the development."

However, the next paragraph is

“The Michaels Organization will build, own and operate this development. Disney won’t profit from it,” Ancora-Brown said. “We plan to set a 75-year lease on the land to ensure affordable housing remains available to Orange County residents on this property for decades to come.”

What are those weird sand pits with the pipes for over there? The development is going on top of them it seems. What effect does removing them have. Sometimes they spew water.

I feel like this should be held until infrastructure is built up. We don't even have good cellular signal in waterleigh.

I mean really we’re pulling hairs, this is being built on property that Disney owned and has donated to the development. It’s 3 mins from an entrance to the “WDW Property”

I know where the property is. I'm one of those Horizon West residents who will be affected by the development. I'm about 200 yards from the border of RCID on Hartzog.

Storm water. So the next time an Ian brushes us, RCID won't be able to flood its property to prevent Orlando flooding.

OMG, I didn't even think about the cell phone service. Did you attend any of the meetings with Orange County the HOA set up? I wasn't available. At the very least, the plan should include a cell phone tower or two. Disney has nice ones that look like trees.

If that sign disappears, it wasn't me. 😉
Haha I've been waiting for it to be replaced with the new organizations sign for months.

Where is all that storm water going if it's not going there and how does it even get there? It seems so
Isolated. I wasn't able to go either. People are worried about the new surf park near scofield lacking infrastructure. This is far worse.

The idea is admirable but they should have put it near flamingo and the college village. It's still wrong to rush it when there is no infrastructure. I mean how long did it take to get a gas station at the mark? Is one really enough? The other businesses haven't opened in publix lot and don't seem to be showing any progress plus there are the new towers going up behind it. Those will put even more burden on schools.

Not to mention that elementary school being built less than 100 feet behind my driveway. And the daycare across Lost Creek from it.

What gas station? I know about the one at Walmart, is there another? And where is the Wawa that's being built? I heard rumor somewhere on New Independence.

I think if Disney does have the "town hall" the Sentinel article mentioned, they will discover lots of opposition from their neighborhood, not because it's affordable housing, but because the current infrastructure can't handle the development going up along Avalon right now.

The capacity can’t just be removed.

If you build an affordable housing complex with 1410 units on top of where those pits are right now, I wouldn't want to live in it.

Florida law will require storm water ponds to handle the run off. Not sure you can build ones on the opposite side of Hartzog that will meet code. Or back behind the complex that won't adversely affect the existing neighborhoods.

The seven eleven gas just opened near the Huey mcgoos/new York beer project/starbucks on Seidel. I'm not even sure if it's officially open.
I can't believe how slow that daycare has been going too. New independence far for development like this.

I've never driven down Seidel...I'll have to take a drive this weekend. I've always gone to the Walmart in Hamlin or the new Costco in Clermont, now that I found out I can take Avalon all the way to Colonial...and stop at the post office on the way.

I shudder when the elementary school opens. I'll never get out of Hickory Cove in the AM or afternoon.

And Disney can claim a deduction. I'm not understanding how this is bad as some seem to frame it, they did a good thing as a corporation
