Disney vs childhood obesity

I agree with leaving the wheelchairs for people with disabilities at Disney. Some of these overweight people that use the scooters can hop right up and get in the food line, but they can't hop right up and walk into the normal ride que?o_O
I know there are some people that need the mobility of these scooters, but over the last 5 years or so, it has really been hard not to get a heel or leg nudged by one of these as we "don't walk fast enough" for them. I am glad that Disney is having healthier options, french fries with every counter service does get old fast, that is why I tend to have apple slices now and then as a healthy alternative.
This.
As a person who has been hit full speed by one of these things( I mean really hit. Like she hit me then kept going with me on the basket for about another 15 feet.) I feel like they can be a real danger, especially at night right after the fireworks. Everyone is making a dash for the exit and these people with double wide scooters make the problem even worse. We now either dont stay for the entire fireworks show, or we find a spot near the exit. They lady who hit me looked like she weighed about 500 pounds. I dont mean to make overweight people feel bad, as i'm a tad overweight myself, but I think Disney needs to draw the line on this issue for the overall safety of the guest. I think the only reason Disney will not change the scooter policy is that they make so much money from it. We looked into getting my grandfather a scooter a few years back, and the price was astronomical. We ended up getting him a wheel chair and I pushed.
What if this lady had ran over a tiny child instead of a grown man like myself? I'm surprised we don't hear about accidents like this on a daily basis.

Better to have a corporation decide this than a gov't telling everyone what to do and a fat tax.

I dunno. Neither option looks good to me.

Too Late.

Now how can I reply without starting a obesity war. It's great to see that WDW is doing their bit tho it should have been done years ago.But here's the problem. The kids who arrive will probably be over weight in the first place. I blame the parents, and I see mums and dads over here in Scotland who are waaaay over weight and their kids are just the same.I watched the Jamie Oliver show when he went to America to try and convert this college canteen food for a healthy option.Anyway before I get carried away, good to see Disney doing something positive.

This is not always the case, I am overweight I freely admit I am FAT. I also know my problems stem from growing up in a household that food was comfort and I struggle daily with emotional eating I am bored I eat, happy I eat etc. I also have a thyroid problem which makes it harder to drop the weight. I'm far from lazy we own a farm and I am out there working daily for hours doing the things that keep the place running. I'm far fitter then some of my super thin friends, they tell me all the time they don't understand how I can work so hard out here that they could never keep up.

I have two daughters both are TINY one is 9 and weighs in at 52 pounds 49 inches tall the other is 16 and 5 ft tall and 98 pounds. I teach them to not be like mom to do the things no one ever taught me when I was their age like if your bored FIND SOMETHING TO DO, if your upset talk about instead of stuffing your face. They are super active kids, we homeschool so they only sit for actual book time for a few hours a day the rest of the time they are working on the farm, riding horses, handling their show goats or chickens, or off playing by the woods/lake area finding wild life.

It's nice to see Disney taking a stand about shoving all the programming into the kids heads during TV that is aimed at them.

Why can't food science make salad taste like doughnuts? That would help the obesity problem.

I was just in Publix the other day, I was in the Produce section and my 9 yr old grabbed my arm and pointed to these bagged apples and made a "I'm gonna puke face". So I looked closer and couldn't believe what I was seeing Apples FLAVORED like Bubble Gum!! They had other flavors too but I don't recall what those were.

While I realize that there are many people with specific medical issues that keep them from losing weight, I think that sometimes a reminder to the rest of us that we don't really need to eat that Big Mac and ice cream shake and french fries is needed. I think that there is so much auto-pilot going on in people's brains that they quit thinking about what they are eating or even how much.
A gentle reminder isn't mean.

When my daughter was 3, she was frequently picked up from day-care by a friend, who felt that traveling in a car meant having a snack every single time. Finally, I reminded by daughter that we could truly survive being in the car for 15 minutes without eating or drinking anything, and that a car wasn't a restaurant. After that, we never had to speak about it again.

P.S. we got so much exercise walking around Disney World, that even we could indulge in some great meals and even ice cream! I love using up those calories in Disney World.

P.P.S I keep thinking about that line in Heaven Can Wait, when Warren Beatty, says--"so let's play for the good team. If it costs a few cents more to save a fish that can think, let's do it" Okay I know I'm not quoting verbatim. It's a start.

One Little Spark...
Child Obesity is one of the biggest issue for the children. Regardless of cries that unhealthy food laws are stealing consumers' right to choose and supporting the nanny state attitude, sometimes, the regulations actually work as intended. A study published Monday in Pediatrics notes that strong unhealthy food laws may have a strong connection with lower kid obesity rates.
Interesting article. There's another thing that lowers obesity rates in kids...it's called physical activity. But, we all know that can't be done in schools now, due to liability concerns and bullying. They are all our precious little angels who need to take out hundreds of thousands in college grants and loans AFTER high school before they learn to read and do basic math. <yes, sarcasm>

I will gladly manage my own life without the government dictating it for me. The government is meant for my protection of rights, not to be my parent. If I choose to kill myself slowly through bad decisions, that is my right. I will reap the rewards (being health issues and an early death). It is not societies problem, it is my problem. However, when you think about it, it actually helps the Social Security system stay solvent!

I refuse to keep this as a political discussion, but your comment is a rather political post. Health "trends" are no reason to make lasting legislation. I support laws that say, post calorie counts, etc...laws that make people more informed consumers. But, to outright dictate what should or shouldn't be consumed? No. That's crossing a very important line.

You should read Animal Farm. Because, I'm quite sure that Mr. Bloomberg (or whomever) has no issue getting his triple whip Macciato on his desk every morning that has more calories than many African Children consume in a day when he wants one, as he signs a bill that says I can't have a large drink from McDonalds.

Government OF the people, FOR the people and BY the people. Not elites who dictate what is right for us.

I'll end my rant here.

The Jamie Oliver issue was the LAUSD, NOT the parents or even the kids. His show was cut short here (only 4 or 5 episodes, as I recall). Over there, he made a huge impact on school lunch menu planning.

But, what his show skipped, at least in every version I watched (and I'm a rabid consumer of BBC shows) was the lack of physical activity and how that impacts the child, the body, and the diet.

Oh, the irony. 100 years ago people were responsible for all of their choices, not just body weight. Now we need someone else to govern how we live in almost every conceivable way, from eating choices, to car driving aids, to health care, etc. Just be responsible for yourself and your children and you will be fine. I don't mind Disney doing what they can to "help out" but its but a small part of the overall picture.
