Disney vs childhood obesity

Now how can I reply without starting a obesity war. It's great to see that WDW is doing their bit tho it should have been done years ago.But here's the problem. The kids who arrive will probably be over weight in the first place. I blame the parents, and I see mums and dads over here in Scotland who are waaaay over weight and their kids are just the same.I watched the Jamie Oliver show when he went to America to try and convert this college canteen food for a healthy option.Anyway before I get carried away, good to see Disney doing something positive.

I always thought Disney had healthy eating options/choices. (apple slices instead of fries, or fruit instead of cookies or cake for dessert). When my son was younger, I always made sure the good old food pyramid was etched in his mind (and his stomach), and always made sure he ate veggies, not a lot of fried foods, or too much fat intake. (My son has never been considered heavy-set at all, but I just grilled him about healthy eating) I did ease up a bit while on vacation at Disney, I figured he was getting an abundance of exercise between, walking, swimming, etc. I totally agree, it's a parent's responsibility, however, it's nice to see that Disney is taking child obesity into consideration and putting their money where our child's mouths are.

Boy it looks like they are still trying to hide from the Habit Heroes Fiasco..

:lookaroun Yet not everyone has forgotten.

It is good that they are doing this, a few years late though, but still good. I have been wondering if WOL will be opened up as part of michelle's healthy eating campaign.

...after all, interest in health habits (since HH got graveyarded) is beginning to peak somehow. However at this rate, however good of an idea of bringing back WoL is, well, awareness is :zipit:'d right now. AUGH!

I agree with leaving the wheelchairs for people with disabilities at Disney. Some of these overweight people that use the scooters can hop right up and get in the food line, but they can't hop right up and walk into the normal ride que?o_O
I know there are some people that need the mobility of these scooters, but over the last 5 years or so, it has really been hard not to get a heel or leg nudged by one of these as we "don't walk fast enough" for them. I am glad that Disney is having healthier options, french fries with every counter service does get old fast, that is why I tend to have apple slices now and then as a healthy alternative.

Does anyone else find it the slightest bit ironic that Disney had the perfect way to promote good nutrition but gutted it for Soarin? I think they should bring back the Kitchen Kabaret characters, animate them into little short 'commercials' and show that on their networks. Not only would it be catchy, cute, and have a fun retro throwback but it always had a good message.

It takes too long to eat a salad. Cops would be on break all the time.
The only consequence of molecular flavouring technology, if it makes salads more appealing to sweet-tooth cradlers :D

Always good to see a movement in the right direction, as long as healthy alternatives are available and advertising is not pushed on people too hard then it is up to people to make an informed choice about what they choose to eat.

Disney can stop promoting junk food all they want but if the child wants junk food and the parents buy it, that's all on them then. Parents are responsible for their children. It's all about healthy choices. Parents can easily say to children "no, you can't have McDonald's" but so many parents give into kids demands these days that they just say "ok, fine, have a Happy Meal". Parents now are trying too hard to be a friend rather than a parent and role model so they don't want to say "no". They just let the kids eat, say and act however they want to. (Not ALL parents do this but I've seen A LOT of them act this way)

When I was growing up McDonald's was a treat for us, as was Dairy Queen maybe once a month or so. When my cousins were small (younger than 5) and we went to stay with them on school vacations, we would hit up the drive thru at McDonald's or Wendy's a couple times in just that week. Both my cousins were chunky growing up and they still are. One time we were waiting in line for Buzz Lightyear and it was a busy day and my cousin wanted a Mickey bar. OK, that's fine, a nice treat cause we're at Disney, so my uncle bought him one. Half an hour later, walking through Fantasyland he wanted an ice cream sundae so my uncle bought him one. It's all about the parents saying NO and too many parents won't say no anymore.

Just thinking.....as I read through the posts....... How many of the Disney characters are shall we say.... pleasantly plump? How long before we will be seeing Disney promote a slightly thinner Mickey or other characters as slimming down in costume for a better representation of healthy bodies for the children to use as mentors. How long before the animators are called upon to draw only slim bodied animations. As we are told, cartoon characters influence children.

maybe Disney needs to put this in place so that in the future we won't have so many people that need motorized chairs to get around the parks because of their weight problem. If this is in fact thier intention I'm all for it.

I'm glad Disney is offering healthy alternatives. I appreciate having more choices, and my family likes apple slices in particular. I'm hoping they keep the unhealthy alternatives, as well. When we're on vacation, we like to splurge on Mickey Bars and Mickey Ice Cream sandwiches. MMMmmmm. :D

So Disney wants to promote healthy food. Are they going to remove all the unhealthy food from the parks? I doubt that. 90% empty shelves, not a chance.

This is yet another empty corporate gesture to placate interest groups who say companies like this don't do enough.

Oh well, I don't go on vacation to live like a monk. Leave my junk food alone. Place the celery on the ground and back away.

I find it interesting that they promote healthy food, but at the same time offer a dining plan that includes a dessert with every meal...

I think it's great that Disney is making this kind of commitment. But I believe the only way to combat our childhood obesity epidemic is for parents to step up and feed their children healthy foods. This is a step in the right direction, but in no way will it be a solution to the problem.

Totally agree. On our last trip to DL, we were in the parks 6 days. I had burger/fry combo 5 out of the 6. One day I had a veggie sandwich from the Tomorrowland quick serve next to the Jedi Academy. It was actually very good, and I wished I had it more often. But you know what, I like my burger and fry combo just as much. I am glad there is an option, but I wish Disney would quit bowing to a very small contingent of people and public figures insistent on controlling peoples lives.
