Disney to start Furloughs April 19th

Service Trades Council President tells News 6 that negotiations went on all day and will resume over the weekend. As soon as his full statement/update comes in I'll let you all know.
I’m having a hard time understanding what’s being negotiated.
The following statement has been released from President of the council Matt Hollis (Service Trades Council Union)

"Union leaders met throughout the day on Friday with representatives of Disney about the Company’s proposed furlough. We had productive discussions, but a number of issues remain unresolved.

The coronavirus crisis presents workers with a complicated set of challenges, risks and dangers. We need to consider all of the circumstances that Union members face before we reach any agreement with Disney. With so much at stake, we cannot rush into a quick settlement. We will push for the absolute best result for Union members and their families."

“negotiations” are mostly pointless...I’ll tell you who will win 😉
Looks to me like instead of "negotiating" with Disney, the unions would be pleading their cases for furloughs vs lay-offs.
That is what I am gathering. The most costly to keep are going to have to have some sacrafices.
That’s what I was thinking...it’s the best they can try for...

I don't think they'll take away main gates, but I could see them limiting them to much less use per year. We'll see how it turns out.
I don’t think people realize the easy to identify points of the main gates:

1. It’s to get your paycheck back...because that’s what happens when you go back into the parks on your off time.
2. You bring your friends and mostly relatives in. What do they do?
Spend...on a lot of things.

That also doesn’t recognize it doesn’t cost them anything to have you there. Mores crowds sell more upsells...and if they can’t handle you, ya get blacked out.

No lose for Disney at all.

Gonna have to disagree with you there...

What good is a main gate when you can’t afford anything Cause you’re out of work and/or falling Behind?

And I hate to be frank about this: but where else are Disney emps going to work? Especially in Orlando?

If you’ve got the key to mobility down there...I’d love to hear it?

I agree here. Even if Disney outright took away main gates (which I don't believe they will), I don't see most people leaving because of that. A paying job is what puts food on the table and pays the bills, not a main gate pass to play in the park for free, while likely spending money on food and drinks.

Great points. I remember cast members were first blocked from getting into Galaxy's edge when it first opened. Then when things were slow, they lifted the block for cast members, because they knew cast members would come and spend money. Most cast members I know absolutely LOVE everything Disney, and spend money in Disney all the time.

Guess what company knows their consumers better than they know themselves?

...that includes employees that are consumers on their off days

How many college program kids leave their lives from whatever state they are from, to live in Florida just to work at Disney, even if it's part time(sometimes even seasonal)? Like you pointed out, Disney certainly makes good $$$ from just their cast members alone, let alone anyone else. That's why I agree that they'll never get rid of main gates. Maybe decrease the amount of times they can be used per year, but that's it, IMO.

I’m gonna recuse myself here...

...because if you get me started on the CP “trap”...it’s an avalanche that will kill the thread😉

Ultimately the union employees will be furloughed at or about the same time as the non-union and on the same terms (no pay, keep benefits). I think what they're negotiating for would be (a) promises of no pay cuts or benefits changes when employees return, and (b) the order in which employees will be restored to work if less than all get restored (presumably seniority-based).

im curious how this will work too given that in FL unemployment requires the applicant to show good faith effort in becoming employed. Ain’t nobody hiring right now

Obviously they won't be auditing people during periods where they are not recommended to leave their homes. Especially if they are furloughed, meaning they technically still have jobs on the other side of this.

Exactly. With parks and resorts opening up slowly, not all cast are needed for staffing. With CPs and ICPs being considered in the staffing also so that impacts cast from not all needed to work. A union contract in a company should have verbage on furloughs/lay offs.

That’s going to be interesting because they’re going to be the ones called when people start coughing in other peoples faces and not maintaining distance
I don’t honestly see that as an issue. Based on clientele.
Good luck trying to call security to come right away. It will probably be dealt with by operations cast members on the scene.
...on the other hand...you see what happens when they have a “domestic” in Toontown...and it ends up being UFC in Anaheim 😉
