News Disney to pilot electronic-only transactions at its resort hotels

There is a difference in giving the customer a credit for what would have been the credit card transaction fee and not paying taxes. If they ring up the order then they will pay taxes on it unless they void it. But too many of those and the IRS gets suspicious. I can see not charging the transaction fee but I would never make it sound like they are not paying taxes.

Oh I get that...I do occasionally see a sandwich shop that offers a small discount for paying NOT using credit...

But nothing Is stopping them from not paying taxes either.

When we stay overnight or just for the day we use our debit/credit card. If we are on a budget and only want to spend a certain amount of money. We usually just buy a Disney gift card(s) at our local big box or grocery store. In the recent past we have been known to bring a certain amount of cash and hit the first gift shop we find and buy a gift card. that way we stick to budget but don't have to worry with dealing with change.

So for me not a big deal if this goes property-wide. Will be interesting to see how this unfolds, property-wide or If it goes away quietly.

I live just outside of Disney property and we like to go to the resorts once in a while to eat. The Mara is a favorite spot in particular. People like to say Disney is usually ahead of the curve for these payment systems but they still don't even have the chip readers active for credit and debit cards.

The way things are in our society, it is incredibly easy for credit card and debit card information to be stolen. Some people find it easier to just use cash to pay for things. I'm not sure what benefit there is for me, as a customer, to not have the ability to pay cash for my food. We're actually going over to the Mara to eat tomorrow, and while I know this cashless system doesn't begin until next month, I wouldn't have known about it unless I read it here.

It's just strange and inconvenient not to take cash. Are they afraid that the cashiers are unable to make change or something?
Apple Pay and Android Pay is working just fine though. It is weird they don't enable the chip readers when they have these other methods active.

Chip readers are essentially useless...all they do is determine who has the liability during a breach/loss.

The stores were ordered to get them by visa or lose their credit shield...after the Home Depot and target breaches.

Not exactly, they still utilize tokenization when handling transactions, so the actual card number is not transmitted through the system, so it's still very good to use them. This is why card companies have required it be used for transactions or else the vendor is responsible.

Well, my dad would be out of luck. He has no form of credit card or debit card. Cash is king with him. Stupid, I know. Good news is he is way too cheap to go to WDW. LOL Spent my whole youth trying to get him to take us. I am sure he is not the only one who chooses to use cash.

It's not stupid. Just wait until the grid goes down, you won't be able to use any cards, but I bet there will still be places that will accept cash.
Your Dad will know where those places are. :)

Right...I get the tech. But it was beaten before it rolled out if I understand correctly? It's usually about "warm and fuzzies"

And the businesses hate it. Isn't visa going to "no signature" in March? They always want to save the milliseconds

For those thinking cash is outdated, the Federal Reserve does studies of these types of things and found the following in 2016:

  • Most consumer payments are for small value transactions, and cash predominates these small value payments. Approximately 60 percent of in-person payments under $10 were made in cash, compared to 20 percent of in-person transactions for $25 or more.
  • Cash is held and used by a large majority of consumers, regardless of age and income; however, how it is used varies across demographic groups.
  • Consumers’ opportunities to use cash are limited to in-person transactions for the most part. In 2016, only 75 percent of all payments were conducted in person.
(Emphasis added)

Plus, no one can track your cash transactions (Don't think the government isn't watching everyone, even you, John Nobody-Special).

I don't begrudge anyone who wishes to use plastic for everything. As I said previously, I've had enough problems with cards already to last a lifetime, and I hopefully still have another 40-45 years to go. As such, I'm much more wary of using cards for more than what is absolutely necessary, so you can pry my cash out of my cold, dead hands. :)

Already unlikely. And if it does happen you wouldn’t be able to pay cash either.
Yes, you wouldn't be able to pay with cash, agreed.

But as far as power and computer systems? not as unlikely as you would think - entire parks and resorts have been without power for hours, resort reservation systems have been down for hours, travel agent systems and consumer facing Disney central reservation systems are sometimes down for days; FP+ and theme park attendance/entrance ticket systems have been down... the ability to use your MagicBand for your dining plan credits at locations is not uncommon.
