Disney to Extend The Lion King 3D Stay in Theaters
Posted on September 26, 2011 by John Frost

The 3-D reissue of the 1994 Disney animated feature “The Lion King” won 1st place at the box office for a second week in a row. The estimated $22.6 beat out Brad Pitt’s Moneyball and Morgan Freeman in Dolphin’s Tale. That makes the total take for The Lion King’s 3D release around $61.7 million.

This begs a question, with no real 3-D films opening next weekend, would Disney extend the run of The Lion King? Dave Holis, Disney Studios head of distribution, says yes. So check your local listings if you haven’t yet caught the updated version.

The 3-D Blu-ray / DVD version will still be released on Oct. 4th.

As much as I am glad to see this movie doing so well (as young audiences get a chance to see it on the big screen), is anyone really surprised that it was "held over"?

I think that they built that into the time frame for the Blu-Ray release, although I would think that they would have built in perhaps at least another couple of weeks between the two.

I think Disney would do well to do more theatrical re-releases, anyhow, of their classics -- so that a new generation can see them on the big screen.

I can honestly say, I saw it in 3D this past weekend (even though I have it on DVD and VHS) and it was GREAT! The 3D was suttle and some actions scenes were a little blurry but everyone clapped and some sang along with the songs.....i even imagined I was at Mickey's Philamagic Theater during "I just can't wait to be ing" segment with my theater glasses....
It's the original version, the morning report song is not in movie version... I do believe though it will be included on the DVD bluray along with the bloopers:ROFLOL:

Disney may not have expected this currant release of TLK to be as successful as it has been, considering just about anyone who really wanted to see it owns it already on tape or disc. I think it is wonderful that it is doing so well as this will hopefully encourage Disney to continue re-releases of some of their better traditionally-animated classics. If TLK convinces them to go ahead and re-release other steller efforts in 3D, that will be great. I am all for it...for these films really need to be seen on the big screen.

I saw the re-release today and very much enjoyed it. I have to say that the digital projection really made the picture come alive in a way that was simply stunning. Was there restoration work done to convert it to the new format? I am asking as the colors seemed bumped up a notch and looked STUNNING. The sound was also fantastic....i saw and heard things i have never done so before and i have easily seen this film 40+ times ( several in a cinema).

The 3D effects were very well done as well...more atmospheric then always 'in your face'. People who are not fans of 3D movies may well enjoy TLK, as it is enough of a effect to create some dimension and not headaches. Well worth seeing again...in this new format.

There were about 12 people in the theatre with me, only one being a child. It was great to still see it being appreciated by adults even after all this time. A true classic of a movie.

Definately make the effort to see it!!! A great experience to relive on the big screen!

Glad it is doing so well in the theater and maybe Disney will do this with another classic. I was happy to be able to see LK again today. I saw it last Saturday too so I saw it twice while it was re-released. Didn't see it in 3D though but that is ok. Looking forward to next Saturday when I will be able to pick up my copy in DVD/Blu-ray.
