Brookstone only somewhat recently exited bankruptcy. They're hardly a grand model of success.
Okay, okay, Brookstone hasn't fared well, but not because of that concept. They had other issues such as bad management decisions and more that led to their bankruptcy. And LOL, I would certainly not call it a 90s store. It was a 90s store at one point... in the 1990s. Now it's 2016 and it is a 2016 store. They sell modern, quality stuff... I can't help but wonder when the last time many of you have been to a Brookstone is. Now that they're in good hands, they are doing better and slowly recovering. By the way, the company that owns them now also operates Spirit halloween stores, which have lawn and house decorations all over the stores that react when people walk in front of them or press a button. And Spirit stores are very successful.
Brookstone, for the last few years, was like the Cleveland Browns of retail. They wouldn't let one guy stay as CEO for long enough to take the company in any real direction. Different leaders have different ideas, but when one guy starts something and a new guy changes the plan every year, nothing but a mess comes from it. Only difference is I like Brookstone and I think the Browns are just totally lame.
Apple Stores, on the other hand, have employed this concept very very well, and they would probably be the prime example of it. This concept of letting people try things, of being a real-world advertisement... not only increases the urge to buy the product, but it's a huge reason why stores still exist rather than all move to online. The rent they pay for that physical location is worth the benefits, especially for a place like Apple.
Oh, and I found this tidbit on wikipedia, though there is no source to back up the part about it being the biggest. So does anyone know if that true or not? I certainly do think a big store is needed, but Apple likes to hype things up just like their cousin company, so I think we'd have heard by now if they were actually planning their biggest store for DS.
"Apple is reported to be working with Walt Disney World to create the world's largest Apple Store as part of the large scale development of their Downtown Disney retail, dining and entertainment area that will eventually be completed in 2016 under the name of Disney Springs.[31]"
