SHANGHAI | Thu Nov 4, 2010 11:21pm EDT

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - The Walt Disney Co (DIS.N) has signed an agreement with a Shanghai company for the establishment of a Disneyland theme park in the city, bringing its long-planned park in mainland China closer to fruition.
The deal was reached with Shanghai Shendi Group, which was specifically created for the development of the Disneyland project, the official Xinhua news agency said on Friday.
Disney confirmed the Xinhua statement and said it was still awaiting final approval from China's central government regarding the incorporation of the related joint venture companies and the completion of regulatory procedures.
"For quite some time, we have been involved in discussions with the Shanghai government about building a Disney theme park. We can confirm the statement from the Shanghai government that we have taken another step forward in the approval process," a Disney spokeswoman said in an emailed statement to Reuters.
Shanghai's Disneyland is expected to cover around 4 sq km and cost about 25 billion yuan ($3.75 billion), Xinhua said. Disney itself gave no further details.
It was not clear what the ownership structure of the park would be like, but state media reported last year that an investment company controlled by the Shanghai municipal government would own a majority stake in the park.
Disney received approval to build a Disney theme park in Shanghai a year ago, but discussions about the specifics have been ongoing and few details have been released publicly.
Disney has long sought to build in Shanghai, a wealthy city of about 20 million people that is ringed by the prosperous Yangtze River Delta, home to tens of millions more potential visitors.
It was less enthusiastic about building near Beijing, which has fewer large population centers in the immediate vicinity.
Disney's foray into the China market has been mixed so far, with its Hong Kong Disneyland park reporting a loss last year.

Just saw the layout of the park this morning. A little variation on the typical Magic Kingdom "spoke and wheel" design.

Raven, I'm sure you get this often, but I'm extremly jealous of you from time to time... :)

You know, they keep expanding like this they are going to really make it hard for me to even dream of visiting all their parks some day.

I would love to get to Tokyo Disney someday, but it is unlikely. The Shanghai and Hong Kong ones are also extremely unlikely. Paris, we'll see.

Paris is pretty likely since I'm so keen to see Phantom Manor...

I think it's great that the Disney Empire is considering expanding, but I don't want to see it become like Six Flags and have a bunch of parks all over the place. :lookaroun

Bring on the artwork!!! :D

Raven, any hints please? I'm hearing rumors of a radically revamped Main Street... know what that's about? I'm going to guess that the hub-and-spoke layout has been abstracted or stretched about, perhaps around a lakefront or like Tokyo DisneySea.

The park's size of 4 sq km does not seem too big. How does that compare to some of the other Disney parks?

Disneyland Resort (California): 510 acres
Walt Disney World: 30,080 acres (or 47 square miles)
Tokyo Disney Resort: 494 acres
Disneyland Paris Resort: 4,940 acres
Hong Kong Disneyland Resort: 320 acres

4 square kilometers is equal to 1.5 square miles, or approximately 1,000 acres

Uh, I think those are the total sizes of the entire resort complexes. We're talking about the sizes of the actual MK style parks.

Oh, sorry about that! :animwink:

Disneyland: 85 acres
Magic Kingdom: 107 acres
Tokyo Disneyland: 115 acres
Disneyland Paris: 138 acres
Hong Kong Disneyland: 55 acres (will expand to 68 acres soon with addition of Grizzly Gulch, Mystic Point, and Toy Story Land)

I have a good feeling about this. I hate that they are expanding so much without working on the existing properties too much, but $3.75 billion makes this sound like Disney is ready to spend. The park itself could be one of the more expensive parks in the world, and if I understand correctly, will use Universal Creative's business model, meaning that the money will be used more effectively. This park could very well match Tokyo DisneySea.

Remember a few things for those that are concerned about Disney spending money in Shanghai instead of WDW and other parks.

1. Disney is paying less than 50% of the total cost
2. Disney Company revenues from the parks is only about 25% of overall income.
3. The big prize in Shanghai is not getting a new park, but breaking into the TV and Movie market in the mainland. That is what Disney really wants to come out of this.
4. A new Disney TV deal will increase the the attendance at the parks and everyone will win.

I am also looking at the 2014 opening date; till this everyone was saying 2015 or 2016. I will have to start packing soon.

WDW - 1975 Tokyo - 1984 Disneyland - 1984 Paris -1992 Hong Kong 2009 Shanghai - 2014???

The local parks are mature and in mature markets, the obvious place to expand would be in foreign markets where TV/Movies/Parks can be introduced into an expanding pop culture market.

Disney doesn't allot a certain amount of money for all parks and says "that's it, Shanghai is getting it all!", this is just a project. A project that will add value to the company and bring in more money. More money to spend on things state side.

You have hit the nail on the head. Disney now has a partner with the mainland that is going to want to get people into the park at Shanghai and also people from the mainland into Hong Kong Disneyland. The way to do this is with more Disney TV and Movies. Watch the government open more of those markets to Disney as the the new park gets ready to open.

I don't think the size of the park has been released. If you compare those numbers KentB3 posted, the Shanghai plot is about twice the size of the whole Disneyland Resort. Clearly, that has to be the size of the entire property.

Accourding to TMCNet.com News:

The first phase is to use 4 Square Kilometers (about 1.5 Square Miles). Total land set aside for this project is 20 Square Kilometers (about 8 Square Miles).

My understanding that the first phase will include the park, at least two hotels, and support facilities.

More details are starting to come out about the Shanghai Disneyland project. The Beijing Review has the following details today:

The whole project, which is to cover 1.16 square km, will be the largest Disneyland in the world, said He Jianmin, Director of the Tourism Department of the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, which participated in the appraisal of the project.

The construction will be divided into three phases. The first phase, including a nearly 1-square-km theme park area, is to involve an investment about 25 billion yuan ($3.68 billion) and is planned for completion around 2014. After it opens, the number of tourists is expected to add up to 10 million every year, while the total tourists visiting the whole park will be 30 million annually, He said.

Water will be one of the main features of the first phase of the Shanghai Disneyland. A 0.39-square-km lake will be built in the first phase, which will take up a sizeable proportion of the entire park. It will be used as a base for water recreation activities and transportation.

In the northeast of the lake, a 7,000-square-meter artificial island will be built. On the north side of the lake are spaces for the construction of a public transportation hub, entertainment facilities and hotels. A river which will surround the park has been under construction since October. As a whole, the park will present to tourists an impression of a water world.
The section to be built in the first phase will focus on the theme of a magic kingdom. It will include five different theme areas.

A 20-square-km Shanghai International Tourism Resort will be built to surround the theme park. A joint venture set up in August by Disney and the SSG will be in charge of operating the Shanghai theme park.

A special Disneyland subway line is to be built to link the fun park with the urban area of Shanghai.

Interesting news...but I personally think this park is going to partially pirate business away from Hong Kong Disneyland, and I also think this project is s__________g quite a bit of funds out of the company that should really be poured into the Orlando, Paris, and Hong Kong parks. Why Disney builds half parks and lets them grow stale without expansions is beyond me. You have two half day parks in Orlando, a half day park in Paris, and a half day park in Hong Kong. Get those 4 up to par before we go blowing billions on another resort.

And what's with Shanghai gettting the BIGGEST Disneyland style park? Why do they deserve all of this love all of a sudden?
