Disney Security?

I might be a bit paranoid due to recent news, but in all the times I have been to Disney I have not given significant thought to security in and around Disney parks and resorts. All I know is there are bag checks and now apparently random metal detector screenings. We will be going very soon, and given the big holiday weekend paired with a new feature opening, I'm really hoping Disney has their stuff together. Anyone know any insider info or insight about this sort of thing? As I said I am green to the whole operation, if there is one, and it would be great peace of mind roaming the most magical place on earth that I don't have to constantly be looking over my shoulder. Thanks in advance (& sorry if this has been covered, I don't have time to search through a billion threads).

Love a little Disney every day!! ;)
Tons of security goes on unseen besides what is seen. Anything can happen anywhere but I feel safer at WDW than even my local grocery store or theater (we had a shooting where 2 women died and many hurt from a random mass shooting a few years ago). ;)

Can't stop all stupid/crazy. Disney does its best to try.

I think they could do even more, but I know they do a lot you can't see.

I believe that at times to be an imagineering illusion. I prefer the more TSA approach Uni has in place. If hand check was the BEST PRACTICE our airports would go that route. Uni went to the practice of TSA with Xraying the belongings brought into the parks, Disney has opted not to. Begs me to wonder why they believe their practice is better?

I also don't believe they see all they want us to believe they see. When something 'happens' at a resort or in a parking lot it isn't usually found to happen in an area where cameras are led to be thought to be. There also seems to be a rub when a guest calls for the Sheriff vs Disney Security when something happens. Somethings are about appearances and statistics over best practices. I think Sam's Club has more cameras being monitored per square foot than Disney has.

Disney is fairly high on the non-gov't terror list. It has an insane amount of shock power if something did happen. I will be there in the Summer. All bags get checked. No one will be dressed in giant parkas and robes to attach something to the body.

There is no magic bullet. All ticket holder arent made to go through body scanners and stollers are only given cursory checks. Lots can get through.

Add in the fact that the easiest place to cause chaos would be at the security checkpoint where everyone is bunched up like cattle, its a tinder box for something to happen one day I think.

Disney's security isnt just point enforcement, but distributed in depth.

They definitely need to make it so everyone gets checked, like at universal. It's the best method to make sure we feel safe. I'm going to be honest and say we are always paranoid to go to Disney springs. Disney is such a huge target, but I feel like in order for Disney to do something about it, something bad has to happen unfortunately.

You guys have more faith in Disney security than I do. I still see selfisticks in the parks for god's sake, and how many years have those been "banned" for??? This is the reason I still conceal a pocket knife when going in. Im not ready to lay my family's safety into the hands of Disney 100% of the time yet.

I only trust Disney so far. You can't stop a determined terrorist. The Manchester incident just raised the bar by going after a target that was known to be filled with children and young adults.

The bomb in Manchester was detonated in an area near the exits on the way out where the bomber did not have to pass through a security check to enter the building. No metal detectors to catch him there. There are plenty of crowd choke points outside the parks. Disney has uniformed security with bomb sniffing dogs patrolling the part entrances.

I still don't understand how a sneaking a pocket knife into the park buried in the depths of a stroller will protect your family from a shrapnel bomb or semi-automatic weapons, but if that makes you feel safe, go for it.

That's kind of the area I was referring to when I said they can do more. I am long proponent of complete x-ray of all bags.

You mention the TSA, but they are probably the worst group of security in the US. Many studies have shown they miss almost everything.

Truth is once you are inside the parks your more likely to be injured by a mishap on a ride than you are by a terrorist doing anything.... The only real point where terrorist would likely strike is the large congested area at the security points. Those have always been the most vulnerable points for a nutter to do something like was done in the UK... So if you want to be on the look out for anything look for people wearing bulky coats or jackets in the Florida heat - any would be bomber is likely going to use a bomb vest and it is going to have to be concealed as much as possible until they get into a crowd, so if you see someone wearing a coat or jacket in the Florida heat run the other way and after you get a safe distance tell someone... But don't say anything that might alert the bomber while your near or he might detonate early.... Did that make you feel safer? Reality is the odds of being involved in a terrorist attack are pretty darned low. Probably more likely to be attacked by a shark than blown up by a terrorist so ask yourself if you will stop going to the beach? If not then there is no reason to avoid Disney.

I don't feel safer going to Universal... I think either park is just as vulnerable because they both have the very vulnerable checkpoint choke points. Frankly a bomber going off at the MK checkpoints would probably cause less damage than one going off at the Universal check points simple because at Universal you have a ceiling to help redirect the blast wave and then Universal is also on an elevated plate form so it is also more vulnerable to someone driving a huge Oklahoma City bombing style rental trunk under it and blowing it up from beneath.... I'm going to have to say I feel safer with Disney's random checks than Universals universal checks simply because the checks are probably not going to be effective at ever stopping a bomber only in bunch all the visitors up for the bomber.

Unfortunately over on gun forums I read people talking about concealed carry into Disney all the time. They say it has gotten harder since they now run everybody through the metal detectors, but not impossible. Some guns are even mostly polymer now.
