News Disney Riviera Resort announced

For anyone who has ever stayed at the old Barbados section of Caribbean Beach (where Riviera now sits), or ran/walked the promenade, or sat on the beach or swam at that quiet pool, do you remember who ridiculously windy it was always over there???! The wind always blew across the water right into that village, blowing sand across the Promenade. Sitting at the pool felt like you were in a wind tunnel. Riviera just may be the windiest resort on property now lol.

There is a growing enthusiasm for Riviera on the DVC boards I frequent. While some still balk at resale restrictions (if you buy resale, you can only stay at Riviera, you can't book another DVC resort) and others complain about the pricing (who doesn't), more people are getting excited about staying there.

From the photos and videos, it seems to be one of the more detailed DVC resorts I've seen, with the wall molding, etchings, etc. This will likely be the DVC flagship resort and the offerings are definitely more premium than in any other DVC resort.

As for theming, the DVC add-on to GF never struck me as all that themed apart from fitting into the overall GF look. Indeed, I'd go as far to say that AKV, PVB, and the WL DVCs are the most heavily themed. The others, I can easily find variations in the outside world in many locations. And I note that there wasn't a single Disney character represented in any way in my CCV One-Bedroom stay last May.

quick question. Is it supposed to be a deluxe or a moderate?

All DVCs are deluxes. There may be some reason to quibble about its proximity to Caribbean beach and the clash of theming, but they are separate and distinct resorts now. And it's certainly no more of a clash than putting VGF right next to PVB. The only difference is both resorts attract the same bank account.

If there is any Disney character that truly captures the essence of Beaux Arts Nouveau Deco and Mediterranean beauty, it is Wall-E.

Probably going for the romance angle since it's a French-styled resort.

Riviera will have to be open for awhile, I think, before people catch on, but I think they will.

Thats not really an explanation. The resort isn’t just French nor does “romance” explain how this is not just another disjointed element in the Resort’s cacophony of a design. Wall-E has nothing to do with the Riviera unless he was built at Euro Buy-N-Large’s plant in Toulon nor does the technology of a robot mesh with the already muddled ensemble of Beaux Arts, Art Nouveau and Art Deco.

We don't own DVC and never will, so we will never stay there.

That said, looking at the pictures and videos, I think it's a very pretty resort. I love the mural and all the decor. Is it particularly Riviera themed? Probably not.
Nice to look at? Yes! I think it gives the upscale feel they were trying for.

From video and pics I do think the Gran Destino is the nicer looking of the two. I will find out when we finally stay there in May! :)

Hah! As a DVC member I'll likely never stay at the Gran Destino, but it's a very pretty resort from the pics and videos I've seen. Looking forward to visiting it during our Riviera stay at the end of January!

I think Riviera works much better at the detail level than the macro level from what I've seen. The design elements seem to come through in the rooms and in the amenities and lobby for me. The building itself isn't that exciting. But didn't people say the same thing about Gran Destino? And I love the look of its lobby.

I feel similar to it as I do Star Wars. IT's a nice enough place, but it feels like it's keeping up. It's not something that should be commanding the huge price increases they are trying to justify. Not that it's a bad place - but it's "on par" vs. demanding a premium.

If I were to buy in, it would be a middle DVC option vs. the premier option at WDW.

Plus, while a bit nicer, Gran Destino shows a similar feeling at a fraction of the price.

I rode the Skyliner a few times this weekend going between DHS and Epcot. The random people in my cabins all shared the same thoughts as we rode by.
"That's the Riviera? That's it?"
"Looks way better in the pictures"
"It looks almost completed, but surely that can't be all it is?"
"Why would they build that here?"

Yes Alex, I'll take "Things that didn't happen" for $500 please...

;)

Went to a preview today of the resort and overall it’s just very grey and blah. Aside from the literal Disney characters throughout in the artwork it just doesn’t feel like a Disney resort.
The resort also features a very clunky layout it’s odd.
I will say the outside areas are really nice to stroll around but nothing much about it screams Riviera either.

Adding the mandolin music failed to transport me to the Riviera...lol
The hotel is nice...I don't think anyone is arguing that point... Does it feel like a Disney resort? no.
It feels like what someone else said...trying to be a 4 Seasons type Hotel but just not as nice.
The tile mosaics are beautiful...
but the whole property lacks a soul and that Disney touch that we all became hooked on.
I am staying there in June...I will have a better idea then, but not impressed so far.
