OK so I dont come on these discussions often but i just got the new disney Imagineering book and in the beginning it states MICKEYS TEN COMMANDMENTS for imagineers..... and #10 is "KEEP it up(maintain it):in a disney park or resort, everything MUST work! Poor maintenance is poor SHOW!"......so why hasnt disney been keeping up all their stuff.:veryconfu

I know its hard when you have so many other attractions and plans but for people who have been on Expedition Everest when the yeti was in A mode, this attraction doesnt look as good and we all know it would make the story and the end result of riding that attraction soooo much greater.:). I love what Disney does and will always be 100% disney fan and not UNIVERSAL because of how much care they put into there attractions and resorts....but lately i feel like they dont care as much. what do you guys think?

I think the Yeti isn't the best example:

My own thoughts - while I agree things will never go back to where they were when Walt was alive, I think that things are much better under Iger than they were under Eisner (or say, Eisner after Frank Wells died). Spending over a billion dollars to fix DCA and creating a full-fledged park out of the gate in Shanghai rather than the Eisner-method of making "half-parks" like in Hong Kong or Walt Disney Studios Paris are good signs.

how do you know Shanghai will be a full fledged park

I think the yeti is a perfect example considering how there was just a rumor on possibly fixing it and still nothing has happened. For something like the yeti to be not working is a HUGE problem! It is the main reson why the MOUNTAIN is even in asia. He makes people by the end make you want to ride it again and again because the legend came to life. its not just another rollercoaster its more of an adventure with a scary story. there are many attractions that have problems all the time like tower of terror, dinosaur, and splash mounatain.....but theyeti has been broken since 2007 and needs to be fixed fully in my opinion.

What are the other commandments?

(I'm not really sure I like the use of this word in this manner...)

the book states that mickeys ten commandments are as follows
1. know your audience-identify the prime audience for your attraction or show before youe begin design

2. wear your guests shoes-insist that your team members experience your creation just the way guests do it

3. organize flow of people and ideas-make sure there is logic and sequence in the stories, and iin the way guests experience them

4. create a wienie(visual magnet)-create visual targets that lead visitors clearly and logically through your facility

5. communicate with visual literacy- make good use of all the non-verbal ways of communication color, shape, form, and texture

6. avoid overload-resist temptation to verload audience with too much info and too many objects

7. tell one story at a time-stick to the story line, good stories are clear, logical and consistent

8. avoid contradiction(maintain identity)- details in design or content that contradict one another confuse an audience about story

9. for every ounce of treatment, provide a ton of treat-in imagineering walt disney said you can ejucate people but dont let them know your doing it...make it fun

10. is KEEP IT UP(maintain it)- in parks or resorts everything must work....poor maintenance is poor show

Some thoughts on the matter -

First, if I remember correctly, those ten commandments were sort of just something Marty Sklar penned at one point, probably in what was more or less an attempt to explain to people how Imagineering thinks and the way their design works. I'm not sure it's a genuine code of law which Imagineering actually refers to and follows.

And second, Imagineers might say that, ideally, an attraction they design should work properly at all times, but I don't think that's ultimately a decision that's up to them. Usually maintenance falls under park operations, which is a separate part of the company. Of course Imagineers would like all of the attractions to be working perfectly all the time, but when management puts down a budget for how much can be spent on refurbishments, that unfortunately isn't a reality.

Yeah, because Eisner hurt WDW so much in the 80's. Opened 2 theme parks, 2 water parks, I don't even know how many resorts. What has Iger done for WDW?

I miss read educate and I was cracking up I don't care how juvenile it is to laugh at a mis read that resulted in me reading a comment about manual stimulation.

I think the parks are getting better not worse we were in a slump but things are picking up world wide now.

It's not Disney that's not following it.

It's TDO really. I don't think the maintence isn't nearly as bad in the other resorts as much as WDW.

^^ LOL, I was thinking the same thing. It seems kind of presumptuous to apply the same word used for the backbone of basic laws in Western (and some Middle East) civilizations. But that's WDI terminology, not the OP's.

With all the mechanical components on all of these rides, it is unrealistic to believe or even think that they will not at some point have a few hiccups. For the most part they work just fine, but there are certain examples of complete failures ex. the yeti. The yeti is just a big mistake that should have been better thought out. As for ToT and SM and Dinosaur out of all the times I have been to WDW I have never been there when any of these rides were down and have not seen any problems.

Frank Wells. Eisner AFTER Wells died. That's the part you should focus on, that's what he was talking about. Eisner was not the white knight.

There's no telling how much great stuff Disney would have accomplished had Frank Wells not died. :(

Favorite American Dad episode is on "Apocalypse to remember"

Best quote:Buckle: I was an Imagineer at Disney. We'd build this crap in our sleep. Literally. They had this machine that stole our dreams.
Hayley: Really?
Buckle: Figuratively. Its name was Michael Eisner.
