Disney-MGM Studios

I read that soon the name "MGM" was going to dropped from the parks name. This would be because of the contract that had run out. The contract will run out 15 years after the park opened. And this May is the Disney-MGM Studios 15th Anniversary. Does anyone know more about this?

I heard that too... and all things point to it being true. There is even a story the REAL reason behind that sorcerers hat is to block off the well known Disney MGM Studios image of Hollywood Blvd... BTW - it was a 20 year agreement, signed June 27th, 1985. Judging by the way MGM Management thought they had `given away` their copyright for virtually nothing, and tried to reign on the deal, its doubtful it would be renewed!!

Theres a bit more info in this thread:

Yeah.. no problemo! :animwink:

I`ve got TWDC press release they sent me way back then - its 4 pages of A4 printed paper with all the original stats and back slapping on it - the kind sent to newspapers etc. It still talks about a ride called `Great Moments at the Movies` and the TWO stunt shows - one action, one slapstick. I just happened to write them for general info at the time, and this is part of what they sent me. By post. Remember that - envelopes and paper and stuff??!

Also, it is mentioned by date in the excellent book `The Disney Touch` (Ron Grover, 1991, page 174)

That is when the deal was signed - the park of course opened nearly 5 years later. Which makes the deal expire in 13 months, not 1. But the Disney MGM name has been on and off for a few years now - even on the promo VHS/DVD we can order in the UK anually (probably the same as the US Vacation Guide Video) refers to it as `The Disney Studios` one year, and `Disney - MGM` the next - regardless of what the sign above the ticket booths looks like on the video!

I think there is no reason to keep holding onto the MGM name any longer. Its loss would simply mean the loss of the GMR. Everything else in the park has nothing to do with MGM. Considering Imagineers have publicly acknowledged that they are already active in the lengthy process of "re-imagining" and updating this attraction, its no big deal. Disney/Touchstone, along with its other film studios (Miramax/Dimension), now have a line-up of their own successful live-action and animated movies to fill out a very good updated version of GMR without going through really old classic films that very few have probably seen. Assuming all things remain ok with George Lucas, the whole Indiana Jones/Temple part in the GMR can stay too. I don't see where keeping the MGM name helps anymore (of course, beyond the fact everyone calls the park "MGM").

Eisner must be behind this because he knows that we will buy everything with the MGM logo because it will soon be gone, yet another way to make money. :D

I've noticed in the last few years, almost all of the merchandise (clothes, etc.) said "The Walt Disney Studios."

Yes, that is the best part of the MGM name! It saves so much breath. I mean, I don't care about the contract thing. Like CTX said, hardly anything in that park was MGM.

I never call it MGM. I call it the Studios. And there's no more breath saving calling it that then MGM. lol

I will still probablly call it MGM once it closes, since that's what it has been known has forever...But I see the 'MGM' being dropped very soon for some reason.

Ok. MGM has Tom and Jerry. Tom's the Cat Jerry's the Mouse. Mice Like Cheese. Cheese is Yellow. Yellow is the color of Mickey's shoes. And that's why I will keep calling it MGM. Everyone get that? All right.:p
