Disney merchandise thiefs

I did get caught up and leave a store with something.

I picked it up, but then decided not to buy it. But I didn't want to just put it down anywhere, I wanted to put it back where it belonged and was going to do so after I browsed.

When I was done browsing, I thought, "Nothing I want to buy," and proceeded to leave the store.

When I got outside and realized I was still holding the thing, I went back in and paid for it. I didn't even want it, but I felt guilty for having shoplifted the thing, lol, so I paid for it.

It really does happen that people absentmindedly leave a store with something.
Happened to me once! I went to the store and had a potato in a bag, I walked out got in the car and by the time I was half way home I realized I still had it in the bag! I felt horrifically guilty and begged my mom to go back, but she said forget it. Sure enough we sliced it open and it was rotten...(still feel bad tho)

This has also happened to me...at the shop at Carribean Beach, my hands were full, so I ended up putting one of those large pre-packaged pin collections in the cargo pocket on my shorts. It was sticking out of the pocket, obviously not concealed, and I had every intent to purchase it, but I forgot about it and made it all the way out to the bus stop to head to the Magic Kingdom and I sat down to wait on the bus and the bag nearly fell out of the pocket. I quickly rushed back in to pay.

No one ever said a word to me, so I guess they didn't notice, but I felt very embarrassed about it!

No, but wouldn't it be really cool if the CMs were armed with dart guns and were expert markspeople able to pick a thief off from 100 yards???

I say we should start off with a show of power on the DME bus.

You have to realize as well that the law is on the side of the shoplifter. It's certainly not designed to help the shopkeepers. I can't recall if the laws were the same when I worked at WDW but for my retail jobs at home you have to have seen the person steal, be able to describe the exact item they stole and not have lost sight of them at any point before security gets there.

You are not allowed to "detain" them - this would include anything from grabbing their arm to making them wait for security. You can "ask" them to wait or insinuate that they should wait for security but you cannot make them if they choose to leave.

At Disney we would occasionally get BOLO alerts with a description. If we saw someone that matched we would call security and they would follow the person (undercover) and catch them in the act. If we saw someone shoplift we didn't confront them we just called security with the description.

We have shop lifted twice! My DD, 2 at the time, decided to grab a Simba from an AK store in Africa. We didn't notice until we got to our car and were buckling her in the car set and folding up the stroller we discovered the theft...da da dummmm! DH drove me as close to the front as possible and I told the CM standing with the maps, sun glasses, sun screen etc, outside the park what happened. I gave the stolen Simba to her she laughed me to keep it and thanked me for being honest. The odd thing is I felt worse for not walking Simba back to Africa! We still have that Simba and my DD knows she stold it!
A trip a few years later we left the Morrocco store with a Tee Shirt stuck on our stroller. My DD who took Simba, noticed and after a quick laugh we returned it. Again we told the CM but this time she looked confused so I put it back on the rack. Later I really laughed thinking about that poor CM in Morrocco trying to mentally translate my statement..."her stroller stole the Tee Shirt?!?"

when DS was 2 he licked a Buzz cup so I bought it. After that, anything he wanted that I said "no" to he tried to lick! Had to be on top of my game that trip and mostly stayed away from shopping unless he was sleeping or eating :D

It works. ;)
I saw someone stealing crocs once and I started screaming at her in the middle of the store- IDK what came over me, but it REALLY pi$$ed me off that day! She dropped he bag and ran- I chased her for a little bit, but then I thought what was I going to do if I caught her? So I went back to the store (to buy my shoes) and the poor teenaged girls that were in there looked terrified of me

I got something stolen from me before at Disney it sucked. I bought a fleece blanket the stuff you get if you spend so much u get it discounted. It was on the back of my stroller when we went on POTC when we got off it was gone. We use to leave stuff on the stroller bc I felt it was safe. Now I guard everything like I am at six flags.

You have to be careful doing that. :) One of the first things a responsible Loss Prevention program will tell it's detectives is to not chase people out of the store. If that person gets hurt or someone else gets hurt while you were chasing them then you can be in a lot of trouble. I watched one of my fellow LP detectives chase a man across the parking lot of Meijers and the guy nearly got hit by a pickup truck. My supervisor was already on the phone with corporate HQ to start the termination process before he got back to the store front. It is dangerous. Plus, that person that is being chased may have friends waiting for them. The person doing the chasing may end up being the one running in the end. LOL

I agree though. I think that everyone should either call attention to shoplifting or at least make that person feel weird about it. More often than not, a simple acknowledgement that you see the person is enough.
