I don't think mitigation measures were ever intended to last past the development of an effective vaccine. The CDC may well have expected the surge that is occurring as a result of mitigation ending and delta being a more transmissible variant. Their characterization of the current situation as a pandemic of the unvaccinated is supported by data, and if the variant is going to rip through the unvaccinated population, maybe they feel it's better if it happens now than in the midst of flu season with the added burden on hospitals. As others have pointed out, the agency gives guidance, but does not have any enforcement authority and several states are disavowing any additional mitigation. At this point, it's up to the unvaccinated to either get vaccinated or risk COVID and get to herd immunity the hard way. It's unfortunate, but the rest of us will have to live with the fallout from their decision.

As far as WDW is concerned, we went in May when masks were required because we had expiring DVC points. It was pretty miserable. We have a cash stay at CBR planned for late October, but if things deteriorate to the point that masks are required, we'll cancel. I've always been cautious about COVID, but never really fearful of getting it in light of the numbers. Now that I'm vaccinated, I'll be willing to take the chance in October, but I'm not spending that kind of money to wear masks.
Great post

Shouldn’t you be questioning ?
I'm not really sure what your point is. The CDC has been recommending N95 masks for over a year and I wear them on airplanes, per their guidelines. So, as I said before, and as you repeated: masks are effective.

No.

Properly fitted N95 masks are effective.

So if a mask mandate is to return it will need to specify what type of masks to wear and how they should be fitted.

Everyone in America should have to comply with this guidance or not leave their house.

I guess somehow this will be able to be done legally but vaccine passports can’t.

Maybe in Florida. Here in the Northeast, you'd sooner see Big Foot in public than someone without a mask on. The virus raged here all winter with no problem whatsoever.

Question, as I genuinely do not know:

What restrictions did your state have in place when it came to private gatherings, if any? And what was compliance?

I ask, as in my province (BC), as we got into fall and started hitting new peaks, they really found a lot of the spread was coming from private gatherings in homes amongst family and friends, and travelling around the province / country.

It wasn’t until they really got strict, made masks fully mandatory, banned privates gatherings, imposed fines for lack of mask compliance or private gatherings, and as we still peaked, banned travel outside your health authority, banned indoor dining (etc.)… As soon as all those measures happened, we finally got the numbers under control again, and now we’ve maintained the low numbers with high vaccine uptake - restrictions are almost all gone, and spread is incredibly low.

Where did they say this?

This is where we get into the "misinformation" area of things. The CDC has been recommending N95 masks for professionals since the beginning but has never recommended them as the best, or only, mask for the general public to wear. They're excellent masks, and I use them when I'm on long plane trips. But I haven't seen any guidance from the CDC saying to only use them, at all.

I agree that passports are unlikely to be widely required, but there actually aren't that many states that had banned businesses from asking for vaccination status.
If you read thru the detail for the states who are “anti” passport, you will see that most of them prohibit a business using vaccine status in order to provide goods/services.

I think they may be referring to the former FDA chair's remarks yesterday who criticized efficacy of cloth masks for people who are truly looking to protect themselves.

Not sure which you meant to type. A lot of the anti-states stop short of limiting businesses.

N95's will always give better protection then a cloth mask, but they are especially important when there is no mask mandate, because they do a better job protecting the wearer. When everyone is wearing a mask, the difference probably isn't as important.

Just stopped in here to see how many masks I need to pack for my WDW trip in August 😷 So far seems like no change to my pack list but who knows what happens going forward. Until Disney changes course I’m following plan A. My unvaccinated son will be wearing his mask indoors in crowds per the CDC and Disney recommendations, if Disney changes back to masks indoors for everyone then we will all be wearing them too. It’s good to see that the vaccines are still highly effective vs delta. I saw in the other thread that of the almost 2,000 cases Orange County had in the past 3 days all were in unvaccinated people.
We brought way more than we needed. I want to say about 150 plus extras for 8-9 days for 4 people. We probably went through 50 of them. I had some extra blue masks that I handed to our friends who brought a few too many. I brought the black and white ones home. We used maybe 20 more for Scout camp where they were required indoors. That's for 2 people - I happily stayed home and got my booster shot for the trial instead LOL

Ack! Typo. Fixed above…

Meant to say “prohibit”.

Many states include verbiage that is something to the effect of this: “… prevent state and local governments from requiring proof of vaccination as a condition of employment or to access goods and services…”

That is not what the CDC said today.

They said that the viral load of Delta is so high that N95’s are required to provide protection.

Between the airports and the transportation I knew we would need a bunch of masks and if things continue maybe some more now too.

There's a huge range of efficacy when it comes to cloth masks, too. A "buff" (those elastic cloth bandannas) give very little protection, but a well-made cotton mask is much better. Use it with a multi-layered charcoal filter in it and if it's well-fitting, then it's excellent protection against the latest variants. (Also, as others noted... if everyone was wearing even a simple cloth mask, they'd all be quite well protected)
