Great postI don't think mitigation measures were ever intended to last past the development of an effective vaccine. The CDC may well have expected the surge that is occurring as a result of mitigation ending and delta being a more transmissible variant. Their characterization of the current situation as a pandemic of the unvaccinated is supported by data, and if the variant is going to rip through the unvaccinated population, maybe they feel it's better if it happens now than in the midst of flu season with the added burden on hospitals. As others have pointed out, the agency gives guidance, but does not have any enforcement authority and several states are disavowing any additional mitigation. At this point, it's up to the unvaccinated to either get vaccinated or risk COVID and get to herd immunity the hard way. It's unfortunate, but the rest of us will have to live with the fallout from their decision.
As far as WDW is concerned, we went in May when masks were required because we had expiring DVC points. It was pretty miserable. We have a cash stay at CBR planned for late October, but if things deteriorate to the point that masks are required, we'll cancel. I've always been cautious about COVID, but never really fearful of getting it in light of the numbers. Now that I'm vaccinated, I'll be willing to take the chance in October, but I'm not spending that kind of money to wear masks.
