Apparently, they have announced at a press conference that DCL will offer Mediteranean cruises next summer. After checking a few sites, found this at Mousesavers.

The President of Disney Cruise Line, Tom McAlpin, announced that they will be sailing to the Mediterranean for the first time in Summer 2007:
  • 5/12/07-5/26/07- Repositioning cruise from Port Canaveral to Europe
  • 5/26/07-8/18/07 - Alternating 10-night and 11-night cruises to Rome, Naples, Florence, French Riviera
  • 8/18/07-9/1/07 - Repositioning cruise from Europe to Port Canaveral

You meant next summer, right? :animwink:

We were on the Magic last week, and we asked our servers if Disney was planning anything outside of the Caribbean anytime soon. They mentioned something like this would be happening next summer.

I know it will be a tad pricey, but it would be so awesome...:sohappy: :sohappy: :sohappy:

My guess is that it will be very pricey. A tad? That's like saying Al Frankin is a "tad" liberal. However, I'm sure it would be awesome

I would have picked some different destinations.

They could have added Monaco and Venice.

It still looks good though, if not a tiny bit more expensive than some of the current Med cruises.

Have you checked the prices yet? I'm sure they will be in line with similar cruises by other companies. Even so, many will pay a little extra for the family environment and Disney magic.

I have a video file they released about the new ports of call. Sadly I have no idea how to load it up here from my hard drive. If you could share I'd love to post it.

Wanna bet? I had a post on DCL's unbelievable high prices last month and believe me, I don't want to open up that can of worms again but in case you want to see how Disney's prices are "in line", here's an example:

Royal Caribbean has 5 Western Caribbean sailings from Miami in April -
Prices start at $599 for an inside cabin and from $699-$899 (depending on the date) for an outside cabin.

RCCL has 5 Eastern Caribbean sailings from Miami in April -
Prices start at $599 - $699 for an inside cabin and from $750 - $849 for an outside cabin.

Holland Americas Western sailings in April start between $602.52 - $652.70 for an inside cabin and $702.70 for an outside cabin. (their 4/9 sailing is pricier)

HAL's Eastern Caribbean sailings run at $706.83 for an inside and $806.84 for an outside.

Celebrity's Western Caribbean itinerary for April starts at $550 for an inside and $650 for an outside (an amazing bargain!)

Celebrity's Eastern Caribbean Cruises come in at $690 for an inside and $800 for an outside

Princess Cruises (Western in April) start at $749 for an inside and $899 for an outside

Princesses Eastern are priced starting at $699 for an inside and $749 for an outside

Now it's fair to say that these cruiselines are all competitively priced and "in line" with one another. Let's look at DCL:

Their two Western Caribbean sailings start at $1397.80 - $1855.80 for an inside cabin and between $1855.80 - $2404.80 for a catagory 9 (lowest catagory) outside stateroom. Yes that price is Per Person.

The Eastern sailings run between $1386.45 - $1770.40 for an inside cabin and between $1823.45 - $2390.45 for an outside.

Now according to my calculations Disney is running twice as expensive as the other cruise lines. (I didn't price Carnival because most readers agree that they're not as competitive in quality. I also didn't price Norwegian or Costa because I just got tired of researching all of this. ) Now I'm not here to argue whether or not Disney is worth all of the extra money but I will definately state that their prices are not "in line with similar cruises". Costumers are gonna have to pay a whole, whole, whole lot extra for the "family enviornment and Disney Magic".

Your calculations may be correct, but then again, they may be skewed somewhat. There may be specials/discounts that you're not taking into account. I'm not sure since I've not researched the price of a cruise lately.

However, I can say this. If Disney can charge more and still fill their cabins, then they should do so. The market will dictate whether they can continue to do so or not.

Of coarse you're right about this. The supply and demand scenerio is really working in Disney's favor. We were looking at a cruise in early May 2007 (just before the Magic sails to the Mediterranean). The price was only about $100.00 lower than the price quoted on the website. (By the way, I got all of the prices from each cruiselines website so I think the comparison is quite fair.) Now I'm sure that Disney will give better deals during different months (when my family isn't able to sail), but they are consistantly much higher priced then similar cruise lines.

For right now, I could careless whether Disney cruises in Italy, Alaska, Hawaii or Timbucktu. What would really excite me is to find out that Disney was finally building more ships. I've heard that they are waiting for the prices of steel to come down, but it's been 7 years since they've built a ship. During those 7 years they've expanded their theme parks and their resorts. During those 7 years all of the other major lines have built between 5 and 11 new ships. DCL has just continued to raise prices.

Right now the folks that pay these prices can enjoy paying for some exclusivity, but their days are numbered. Disney Cruise Lines profits are way below the other big six cruise lines. Now don't get me wrong, for only being in the business for 7 years, DCL is an AMAZING success story. However, the other cruise lines make more money because they have more ships to fill. Disney will follow suit and then better deals will come. I'll go on record predicting something else. By offering non-smoking, no gambling, family friendly cruises, Disney has made the other cruise lines sit up and take notice. All of the cruise lines offer childrens programs but I anticipate other companies will begin offering ships with a no smoking, no gambling policy. Maybe some boats will be sailing with cartoon characters like the Flintstones, Bugs Bunny, or Charlie Brown. Just as Universal Studios has made Disney World a better theme park, other cruise lines will make DCL a better and more affordable cruise line. In the words of Yakov Smirnoff, "I LOVE THIS COUNTRY!"

Another test market...
It would seem some kind of package with DLP would soon follow if this proves profitable.

I'm kind of shocked they didn't include it as part of this offering. A pre-or post stay at DL Paris would be just the thing to fill those resorts and expose the parks to thousands of new customers!

It's seems the cruises are targeted more at the "locals" in European Countries, than travelers from across the ocean. I was hoping to find packages with airfare, rooms, and park tickets to be available, but I haven't found anything like that yet.

A sad postscript that a no smoking policy may soon be coming to other cruise lines. Today a passenger died from a cardiac arrest and 11 other shipmates were treated for smoke inhallation on the Star Princess. The reported cause for the fire was a passenger smoking on one of the ships cabin balconies. This tragedy happened one day after 12 passengers on Celebrity Cruise Lines Millenium were killed on a shore excursion. (They died in a bus accident and the shore excursion wasn't run through Celebrity.) Any tragedy like this can affect the whole cruise industry even if no fault can be placed on the cruise line.
