Disney Magic and Admirable Guests

A business acquaintance of mine was telling me about her recent trip to WDW. With all of the news and press Disney gets for injuries and deaths on property, and the often stupid lawsuits that follow...and reading post after post about Disney's declining service and terrible CMs...this was a welcomed and uplifting story.

It was her, her husband, her kids, and her parents (for the sake of this story: mom, dad, kids, grandma and grandpa).

Dad, son and grandpa were working on the Kim Possible Quest, and were in China. Grandpa tripped and went face first into a metal fence. He shattered his glasses, cut his eye and knocked himself out. Fortunately Dad is a paramedic and was quick to assist Grandpa.

Her exact quote was, "The Disney people were great!" I guess they hauled him by ambulance to the ER, where he spent 5 hours getting a CT and some stitching...and lots of meds.

After everything, he came out with only a minor concussion, but decided to rent an ECV for the rest of the trip because he was sore from the fall and the meds were catching up with him. Grandma was already in an ECV, so Disney moved them to an Accessible Room that was still near Mom/Dad/Kids' room.

When they got their final room bill, Disney had deducted the rental cost of his ECV as well as their taxi fare from the hospital back to the resort - without even being asked.

So, not only did this family realize it was an accident and didn't ask for, or demand anything from Disney...but Disney also went above and beyond by helping with their emergency and then compensating them for a few things that they weren't at all obligated to compensate them for.

I'm sure the haters will be quick to say, "Disney doesn't care - they're just covering their butts to prevent a lawsuit". Yeah, they probably were, but it's still nice to see them do things like this...and to know there are people out there who wouldn't see the opportunity of a "tripping Grandpa" and that "menacing fence" as a way to get rich.

For the record, she also said, "Even with his fall, we all had a great time - even him!"

Refreshing, to me at least.

if the adventurer's club was still open and the yeti worked this never would have happened.

hope he has a quick recovery!

Good to hear. Something like that happened to us in 2003. My niece (15 at the time) got a bug bite of some sort and she had a bad reaction to it. The affected area started to swell and turn color. We called the front desk and soon after an ambulance was at the room to take her to the hospital. Everything turned out well for us. We never saw a charge for anything.

That is a great story. Thank you for sharing it. I'm glad Disney did what they did and the family took it at face value.
