Disney In Tokyo

First let me say with all the issues that Japan is going going through right now I do say a prayer that they can bounce back on there feet and avoid any further issues of a melt down of the Nuclear Reactors. My heart truly goes out to that country at this time.
Second what will Disney do about the crisis in Japan, Fully shutdown for a very long term or just pull out for good. I have never witnessed such an event like this and do not know how outside companies react to issues like this when they strike hard like this one has done.

I would imagine it wouldn't be much different from horrible hurricanes sweeping across FL or earthquakes in Cal. Just clean up, fix damages, reopen

"Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea suspended operations due to the effect of the Tohoku Region Pacific Coast Earthquake on 3/11. Theme park operations will continue to be suspended tomorrow and thereafter. We will target 3/21 for a decision and notification on when to expect operations to resume.

This earthquake did not cause major damage to the facilities and building in the themeparks, and we have already proceeded with safety verifications. We will make a decision on the timing of restarting operations carefully, taking into account the safety of the parks, and the recovery of transportation systems as well as neighboring infrastructure."

Also, it's not Disney's decision. The Tokyo parks and resorts are owned and operated by the Oriental Land Company, not the Walt Disney Company. Disney just gets a cut of the profits as a licensing fee.

I believe it is against the law for a foreign company to own land in Japan.

The country is also watching to see what happens with the possible radiation leak due to nuclear meltdowns.

I really feel bad for the people of Tokyo and other impacted areas. Yet I marvel at their behavior in the face of such a catastrophy. On Wolf Blitzer last night, he interviewed a reporter who said "there have been no cases of looting so far." Remembering how things unfolded after Katrina and the 89 quake in the SF/Oakland area, I'm sorta embarrassed at how many of our citizens acted & looted in the wake of a major disaster over here.

My heart goes out to all those impacted by this week's events.

Ah, those quakes have nothing on the way people acted in Toronto last summer. No, we didn't have an earthquake. We had the G20 Summit. We flew home from Dominican the day it was here and all the protestors turned the city upside down. And even then, people had the nerve to complain about the cops arresting "innocent" people during that pandemonium. At least SF/Oakland were in a state of survival. The folks in Toronto were just thugs. It made Canada look bad - for once.

But I do respect the Japanese in the wake of this mess. On CNN they used the term "orderly" when talking about the people. It's true the Japanese have always been more orderly and it comes out even in these times.

As for Disney, there is nothing you can do. In general I have always found that they deliberately build their parks in areas where the weather patterns are favourable. Central Florida can have rain, but it never lasts all day seemingly. A hurricane has never hit Orlando or at least done damage to WDW. I would think the same happened in Japan with where they located the park. But I can understand why they close the park temporarily. It's out of respect. Same thing happened here with 9/11 with major sports leagues and stuff.

I'd hate to see anything happen to Tokyo Disney, it's the only other one with the Country Bear Jamboree :D

Forget how people acted following Katrina and the 89 quake. One need look no further than a Black Friday sale to be embarrassed by the needless chaos we feed into. If people react to sale prices with trampling and mania I can't imagine how we'd react to a situation similar to Japan's, just sad.

Disney does not own DLT or TDS, so the ultimate decision is made by oriental land co though stepping away after so much was invested would be a financial disaster for the partner companies.

It is so true if you think about it. Pathetic actually.

Absolutely. Very good point. As insane as the Japanese are about their Duffy & Shellie Mae's, when new merch is released for them they line up for hours to get access to the stuff. Could you imagine what such desired merch would do to the shops in the US parks? Look at the way people behaved on the Dream's inaugural cruise when they opened the shops stocked with exclusive items for that cruise. I've read some pretty awful stuff. It's pathetic.

This is just one of the many reasons I continue to dream of the day I can go to Japan, experience the parks there, and immerse myself a bit in their culture. The things I read totally blow me away...in all good ways.

That's something i dream of too. Japanese people are way more polite than Americans. Americans can be so rude and inconsiderate. Sometimes it really makes me ashamed to call myself an American. :(
