The Disneyland hotel union is taking its three-year contract fight to Hollywood — protesting the company’s effort to get an Oscar nomination for “Toy Story 3.”
The union, Unite Here Local 11, this week began its campaign against “Toy Story 3″ by urging Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences members to vote against the movie for a Best Picture nomination.
A Disney official called the campaign a “publicity stunt.”
About 30 union supporters, some dressed like Buzz Lightyear, held its first protest against the nomination by picketing outside a screening for academy members at the Disney Studios in Burbank, said Leigh Shelton, a union spokeswoman. On Tuesday morning, a few union backers handed out information at the press conference to announce Golden Globe Award nominations at a Beverly Hills hotel, Shelton said. “Toy Story 3″ is nominated for Best Animated Feature.

Protests also are planned for future screenings and other events, Shelton said. A new website, notoystory3.org, went live earlier this week.
“Disney has its eye on trying to win Best Picture. And we just think, although it’s a good movie, that the academy shouldn’t reward Disney for its hypocrisy,” Shelton said.
About 2,100 union members from three hotels have been working without a contract for almost three years mostly because of a dispute over health-care costs.
During that time, the union has staged a week-long hunger strike, walkouts, a one-day labor strike, leafleting campaigns and dozens of protests.
“This is just another publicity stunt from (union) leadership to distract from the fact that after nearly three years their members are still without a contract,” said Suzi Brown, a Disneyland Resort spokeswoman, in a statement. “We have offered a fair and comprehensive contract, including annual wage increases, paid sick leave and reliable, affordable health care.”
