Disney Gives $3 Million to Emergency Care Efforts at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children

I knew it was a joke, that is why I posted what I did, however, with all the garbage that gets tossed around about how awful the Disney Company is, it wasn't really appropriate, don't you think?
Yep. Or I wouldn't have posted it.
No, joking is good, but this wasn't about theme parks, this was about a hefty donation to a very worthy cause. It is tough to find a good reason to joke about it.
Then I'm an overachiever aren't I?

So, interesting little fun fact I found out yesterday ...

In speaking with one of the Dr.'s at AP, he told us that Disney is often donating to AP... But that Celebration receives nothing. Celebration gets the distinct pleasure of being built "on property" and gets the name only, while most of the donations go elsewhere.

Not complaining, since AP is the only level 1-3 pediatric trauma in central FL.

LOL it is a major tax break

It is a tax break. Let's say TWDC has an effective tax rate this year around 33% so they save $1M on taxes by donating $3M. I don't think the major incentive for making the donation was tax savings. Spending $3M to save $1M is not good business. TWDC is being a responsible corporate citizen by giving back to the communities where they have major operations. It's what every major corporation in America should do (and lots do).

If TWDC wanted to be really philanthropic, they could build an entire children's hospital and research institute much like the owners of the owners of the local NBA team.

I don't think its a contest. A billionaire owner of an NBA team should be applauded for making a very nice charitable donation. That doesn't take away from what Disney did. I'm sure if you look at worldwide total charitable giving for TWDC the numbers are measured in the hundreds of millions. This is just one thing that they did.

I absolutely agree charitable giving is no contest. But when giving is publicized as a center point of corporate sustainability metrics, it tends to turn it into a contest. If TWDC wanted to make a huge statement and a project that would yield tangible results in the lives of thousands for decades to come, why not drop a billion on the construction and operating endowment for a children's hospital in Celebration?

No doubt that would be a very generous move.

@Nubs70 is the winner of the inevitable "Disney should do more" comment.

Thanks for playing everyone. See you in the next Disney Charity thread.

Was that in exchange for the basketball stadium the tax payer built for them?

Honestly unless you are outpacing Disney on charity you might want to just say good job Disney or nothing at all.

I'm sorry but if the aim of a contribution in the amount of what TWDC has given is to exemplify their corporate social responsibility, then they should consider something more in line with their market capitalization. Or they could just give a donation and just be quiet. If you want to make a publicized socially responsible donation do in respect to your market capitalization.

Maybe you do not understand corporate donations. I give away tens of thousands of dollars a year for my company, which is not even a small percentage of what they give in total.

1. Large companies give to many many groups not just this one, therefore they do indeed give a much greater overall amount of money.

2. They make the donation public to draw attention to the group getting the donation as much as for any corporate publicity. These groups relish the attention they get from the media story attached to the donation.

They are a publicly traded company not a non-profit. They are in business to make money for their shareholders not to do charity work. A company that donates any amount of money (regardless of market cap) should be applauded and receive positive PR. Without that positive PR there would be less incentive for corporations to donate and less money for the charities that need it.

OK I just perplexed at this point...who can criticize a company who gave $3 million dollars to sick kids? WTH is wrong with these people?
