Disney Gift Cards

Hello everyone-

I'm sure this must be out in another thread, but I just had a quick question on Disney Gift Cards.

I've seen alot of posts that people are "saving" by getting Disney Gift Cards? Is there any savings by getting them? We are headed down in October and would start picking up gift cards if its truly a savings of any kind.

I'm assuming the gift cards are dollar for dollar, but I've never gotten them, so if anyone has insight/thoughts/perks/etc, I welcome the info.

Thanks again

I buy them at BJ's. They're discounted by a few dollars so it saves a little. I buy the gift cards mostly because it's an easy way (for us) to save up money for a Disney trip. I just pick up a $25 or $50 gift card every month and throw them in a box in my closet. We also have a Disney jar that we throw loose change and some $1 & $5 bills (along with the occasional $10 or $20) in throughout the year or two that we're saving.

I gotcha. Hey, these days, even a little savings is better than none. I think for the next couple months I'm going to pick these cards up to simply ensure I don't spend the money and instead use it at Disney. I see alot of people say they are buying them, I just didn't know if there was something I didn't know.

We buy them with a Discover card which gives a minimum of 1% and maximum of 5% cash back(we take the cash that we were going to use pay for the cards to pay off the credit card to avoid any interest). We buy them at Kroger and they will sometimes offer 4x the value for certain gift cards so we use that for up to $1 off per gallon. Can save us $20-25 in gas per fill up. One thing to be carefull of is if you pay for your vacation using gift cards keep the cards. If you need to cancel for any reason you'll need the card numbers for the refund to be posted back on the card.

I have about $250 on my Discover card. I was thinking when it reached $300, I would buy a $300 gift card, charge it on the Discover card, and then call Discover to apply the $300 toward my bill. This way, the gift card would be free, right?

We haven't done it that but think that you would be able to use the account credit. You should also get the cash back for the $300 purchase.

Exactly what we do.. BJ's club too for that reason.... but we are always converting cash into the gift cards which gets the money which might be spent on other things out of our pocket and forces us to save the bucks for the trip. They do add up nicely. Along with the Disney Visa rewards card points it helps make the trip more pleasant.

It's amazing how quickly all of the "little" things add up. We travel to Disney every 2 years and I start saving for the next trip as soon as we get home from a trip. Over the last 2 years we accumulated $1000 in Disney Rewards Dollars from the Visa card; $800 in rewards $$$ from the Chase Freedom card (got that in cash); $500 in gift cards I purchased with the Disney Visa (sort of double rewards there ); and had about $600 of change/bills in the Disney Jar. That added up to a nice chunk of money towards our trip.

We buy our Disney gift cards at Giant Eagle. For every $50 I get .10 off a gallon at their gas station which averages about $10 towards a fill-up.

Last stupid question for the day - You can use the Disney Gift Cards for food inside the Parks, correct?

(sorry, never did the gift cards but seem intriguing)

Yes, I've used them at restaurants as well as snack carts/stands in the parks. I know there used to be a few snack carts that only took cash but we haven't run into those in the last few trips, so I don't know if that's even an issue anymore.

My DW and I use the $ we save from coupons to get our GC, plus if we are under budget each week for groceries we get a Disney GC each week. Between the savings and transferring prescriptions (@ Kroger you get $25, which we turn into a GC) we usually have a good amount of $$$ at WDW!

Hopefully, someone on this thread will know this.

It says I can use my Gift Cards at the Disney Resorts, dining, etc. We have RSVPS at Narcoossees, I'm assuming we are ok to use them at a hotel restaurant and not just dining in one of the parks? (sorry, again, newbie at the GC)

Thank you!
