Disney Genie/Genie+ On Their Way to Anaheim

On my recent trip we got Genie +. It mostly worked well for us, but I noticed how some rides don't accommodate it very well. On a DCA morning, we had LL for Soarin' and when we arrived the LL return line stretched well past Smokejumpers. A CM told us it'd be a 30-40 minute wait. In addition, the standby line had just a few dozen people but was posted at 50 minutes. And they'd do every minute of that 50 while the LLs cleared.

I saw the same thing with Monsters Inc and Smuggler's Run. So some rides now have a system where you pay a premium to get just a slightly shorter wait time. Seems pretty unsustainable at first glance, but it's trending toward you have to buy it in order to have a reasonable day in the parks.

Genie + is worthless on Soarin. It’s not great for Indy either.

That's a major problem with the system-they allocate too much capacity to Genie, and then when rides inevitably breakdown, they get backlogged and try to pump through Genie guests while standby just sits there. AND because breakdowns turn into multi-experience passes, rides that already have maxed out Genie capacity now also get EVEN MORE people trying to use the Lightning Lane. AND people still don't understand how to use Genie, so the lines themselves get backed up. And since it's a pay system, but not priced high enough, people feel compelled to use the heck out of it.

It's a mess of a system, and they'd honestly be better off just going back to at least a paper-based system, because people just don't understand how to do it on their phones at all.

This is my favorite G+ "Hack" if a ride that has a near G+ is broken down keep booking it until it comes back up. I started a day at DCA and Soarin' didn't open for ~45minutes. In that time I managed to book it twice and start my day with 2 ME passes (they didn't work on every ride). I think used G+ as normal, but got to ride GRR and Soarin' during the busiest part of the day when we were walking by.

I actually didn't realize that if something breaks down and you get a multiple experiences pass, you can actually rebook the OG ride until this weekend. Felt like an amateur for a second.

The modify button is also eminently hackable to help stack Genies.

Good to know about this additional hack.

I was at Disneyland on Saturday and I've come to the conclusion that there's the discount or poor man's ticket and then real regular priced ticket (Admission with Genie+). When you are inside the gates at the Haunted Mansion in the poor man's line and it takes 45 minutes to get in the doors, the system is broken.

Everyone would be much better off if they just did a Rich Mans Line with Genie + starting at $100+ which would allow the standby line to move at a normal pace.

Or just have Genie + be ala carte for every ride.

Or get rid of Genie + altogether and raise tickets prices (but that won’t work as they raises prices every three weeks anyway).

This is exactly how Paris's system works, and I do not understand why they don't do the same for CA.

Ala carte or an expensive "full package" option. The day we visited DLP, it was 120 euros for the day, and you got to skip each attraction that offers Premiere Access lines, once. No slots needed, you just show up, scan your pass, and skip the line, and then that attraction is no longer skippable after.

Random thought just now, do we think they added Little Mermaid to Lightning Lane as the back area of Hollywood (including Monsters Inc.), could be closing soon? Get Little Mermaid onboarded, before they remove an attraction?

This is my kind of conspiracy theory haha. I don’t think so though. If you recall, they announced Little Mermaid and MMRR being added to Genie + the same day they announced the discounted child tickets. I think they re just trying to market Genie + as being more child friendly as most of the rides offered aren’t really geared towards young children. Now of course this doesn’t mean they can’t also have other reasons.

Also, would there be any need to onboard Little Mermaid ahead of time? Not like they couldn’t just add it to Genie+ when Monsters goes down.

Maybe to have more time to get Ops adjusted to the new flow? Before DCA is down an attraction?

But you know what? I wouldn’t be shocked if you’re right. Let’s not forget they also recently moved the Avengers store out of the Hollywood Backlot.

Losing Monsters Inc would be a loss as you’d be losing one of the only traditional dark rides in the park. I rarely ride it but I do think it’s under appreciated… at least around these parts.

I'd miss it; it's a top 5 DCA attraction for me. Love the smell of ginger in the sushi restaurant; the humor (the bumpkin monster who tells reporters, "My thoughts were not my own"); the interactive monster at the end. All very charming; IMO it's the best of the "lesser" DL dark rides (Pooh & Mermaid being the others).

Of course, Hollywoodland is perhaps the worst land in a U.S. Disney park, so I'm fully on board with any quality replacement.

I hadn't been back there in a long time before going Thursday to hear a band. I was pretty shocked to see the Hollywood Lounge area. I'm normally in favor of more seating in amusement parks but it looks like a low rent waste of space in that back corner.

It’s been low-rent, under-utilized, and generally depressing for 20 years. A total bulldozing is long overdue (as much as I enjoy the Monsters Inc. dark ride!).

It's nice that Monsters Inc is around for families, I suppose, but the ride's not good enough to be sacred for me if they ever decide to do a proper Hollywood redo.

Pretty sure Performance Corridor and Commissary lane have it beat. It is probably the worst land that actually has an attraction though.

This is certainly bizarre, but I actually have a soft spot for Commissary Lane. I adored the Sci-Fi Dine-In as a kid.

I refuse to dignify “Performance Corridor” by calling it a land.
