I have a family of 4( Myself, wife, daughter4, and son2. We want to take a Disney cruise next year2014. From what I have looked up I want to stay in a Cat 08A cabin. I wouldnt mind a balcony but with two little ones I and my wife would feel safer with a large window or two. I was just wondering if this cabin layout is ideal for my family. This would be our first cruise.
Also any advice is welcome.

Get the single large porthole vs. the 2 small. The 2 small portholes are tiny and up high while the large porthole is huge. If you are interested in the verandah, the openings are covered with plexiglass so the kiddies can't "jump ship". Just thought I'd mention it. ;)

The category 8 rooms are great! They're bigger than the standard rooms and that extra space sure is nice!

It's true, what Kelly said. The openings are very covered, and those doors are stinking hard to open. Not hard to open I guess, but hard to figure out HOW to open. I'd feel safe with small children in the verandah rooms, but if you still would feel better in an oceanview room, category 8 is great.

Haven't been on the Fantasy (yet, still hopin') but the veranda door on the Magic had a latch up high (above eye level) as well as the normal waist high handle. Unintended openings are not possible with the latch engaged. However, it sounds like something you don't want to even consider the possibility of, and I agree with previous posts, get 1 large porthole instead.

From what I have looked up the 8A cabins have 2 large windows that include benches on them. Or at least thats what I gather from researching it. I could be wrong though.

@Disneyfalcon Do you have any experience with the Cat 8A cabins specificly, pictures stories from friends or anything like that.
I dont know why but my heart is set on that catagory cabin.

8A's do have two large portholes. I think when people were warning you off of the small portholes they were thinking of the Magic and Wonder. The small portholes on the Magic and Wonder are not good and should definitely be avoided. On the Dream and Fantasy, the portholes are large and the more the better I say!

What's different about the 8A's on the Dream and Fantasy is that they are kind of built sideways, so they're not set up like the other category 8's. They have the same size as the other category 8's but they don't all sleep 5, most sleep 3 or 4. Some are built kind of like suites with a dividing wall between the main bed and sofa. Others have no wall.

Interestingly enough, because of the way they are set up, they don't have split baths.

Here's a video I found of 5022. This is one with a wall:

Tammy I actually like that better then the verandah room we have on our upcoming trip, it seems bigger LOL. Of course I love walking out and seeing the water but I sure wouldn’t mind that if we ever needed a room like that!

It is bigger than categories 9-11 and categories 5-7! They're really kind of neat set ups! :)

@Disneyfalcon Thank you so much for the video. I tried looking for one and didnt have much luck. You made my choice that much easier.
Another quick question. What is customary(sp?) for tipping? Last time I was on my one and only cruise was over 10 years ago and my parents paid for it.

No problem! Tips for the 4 main tipped positions work out to $12 per guest per night. :)

If it was just Tracey & me we could do the single bath but with the boys the split bath is necessary. That's why we ended up booking 2 staterooms on RCI's Allure for Thanksgiving: no split bath.

In fact, just having an adult there is not even enough to check out a child from the club. Well, I don't know if it's still this way, b/c my daughter is 17 now :( but when she was in the club, they asked us to choose a password on the first day of the cruise. And any adult asking to check out your kid had to know the password. So not only did somebody have to check the kid out, but s/he had to know your password as well.

On the new ships (and maybe on the old ones now for all I know) - they also scan your room key and the wrist band that is permanently attached to the kid to ensure that they match up.
