i have only just started running, and can only really currently run a few miles without getting very tired :(, but i thought a 13k would be just right to train towards for next year. me and my gf have both bene looking forward to it, going to the gym more and more, then we see the news the other day that they have discontinued it :(:(

i really hope it is good news, and they are not just going to add another marathon / half marthon cos i just dont think i am up to these standards yet.

good luck with your races .

does anyone have any rumours / insider info as to what the annoucment maybe contain?

One of the people that everyone love to hate, Jim Hill, reported the other day about some new domain names that the mouse had registered. Admittedly, that's not a guarantee of doing anything with them, but these included

* DISNEYWINEANDDINERUN.COM
* DISNEYWINEDINERUN.COM
* DISNEYRUNWINEDINE.COM

Oops. Make that two races:

* DISNEYFOODANDWINEHALF.COM
* DISNEYWINEANDDINEHALF.COM

Which would indicate possibly revamping the Race For The Taste. OR, a new event tied into the Food & Wine fest out at DCA. But if I recall correctly, Disney Endurance did say they would be announcing details of the new race soon, I imagine after ToT is done.

Even if they do turn it into a half marathon, Disney does seem to usually keep a shorter distance race with it. Even the ToT has had a shorter race. (Well, 2 outta 3 years ain't bad)

I believe that the Everest Challenge is safe for another year or two as it seems like only ToT13k and RFTT are on the chopping block, so at the least you chould shoot for that?

But think about it, going from no running to running a half seems like a long ways away, but its a bit less than twice as far as the 13k. So train for the 13k, and then just keep going a bit more. There are plenty of training strategies out there to hit the 1/2, so don't let it discourage you. Aim for a local 5k first, (The ones run by breweries are usually lots of fun.....) and then a 10k, and by then you are in the routine and it seems like nothing. When I started running, it was kind of a fluke, as I hated it growing up. But then I thought it would be fun to do the WDW marathon, so I set that for a goal, and 2 years later I did it. And now 2 years after that I am dragging my butt down there to go Goofy. Hitting the road 5/6 days a week seems like a lot, but it's so part of my routine now I actually miss it when I miss a training day. And actually winning a few medals at local 5k's is awesome. It had been like 15 years since I last got a trophy for anything and darn it, I'm damn proud of my medals. (Even the ones I got just for finishing! Love my Mickey Ears medal!)

The Disney races attract all types of runners. From the 2 hr 20 min marathoners, to the 7 hr ones who just squeak under the cutoff. People who run in costume, and those who just walk along talking with their friends. It's a good goal to shoot for, so don't get discouraged simply because they may be dropping one race and the others seem long. Keep it up!

I've heard from credible sources on other forums that the new October race (which is supposed to be announced on Thursday, I believe) is going to be a food and wine themed half marathon, to be run on October 2nd next year, in the evening. (Some said starting around 7ish, others said after park closing...so closer to the start time of ToT13K. I can't imagine a half marathon starting at 10:30 at night, but I'll run it nonetheless!

Everest was..insane...if (like me) you were in the later waves, thanks to the monsoon. But I'm looking forward to a hopefully dry ToT13K!

I did the coast to coast challenge this year. Both events are awesome.

If you can run half of any if the races, you should be able to finish.

WDW- 3:11
DL- 2:46

I got better.

A suggestion though... Unless you plan to walk, put in an estimated time about 20-30 minutes faster than you plan to finish. I found myself in both races walking the first two miles fighting traffic. It would have been better to half a faster pace to start.

They do suggest that if you are running for a time you may not reach it with the large amount of traffic.

My one regret was near the finish at WDW, we ran by the ice cream stand outside the Electric Umbrella and did not grab a Mickey Ice Cream Bar to eat as I crossed the finish line. That would have been classic.

As hot as it has been in October, a 10:30 start would be about the only time that would make sense.

And on your earlier point, speck76 reported the rumor of an October half marathon right here at wdwmagic a month ago. http://forums.wdwmagic.com/showpost.php?p=3741855&postcount=33 You went to other forums for your Disney rumors? :eek: The shame! :lol:

I would actually prefer to start slow and get warmed up before I start running for real for the next 26 miles.

No, I go to another site for other people to commisserate with over the pain of trying to get in shape for Disney runs...I get my rumors here, but normally the two don't overlap ;)

Regardless, the new information isn't that there's going to be a half in October - that's been pretty well known since they announced that the ToT13K and the RFTT were going away (or before, even - I heard there was a new half marathon coming in the fall at an Expo a while back)...

The new news I heard this week was the official theme (wine and food...many had speculated it'd be a pirate theme, to counteract the princess in march) and rumored date (october 2nd).
Of course, nothing's official until Disney announces - but the URLs mentioned earlier make it seem quite plausible.

i dont post on here often, but do lurk quite a lot, but what are peoples thoughts on Disney using such themes as "food and wine"?

Disney could have so many themes, i feel it would be more special with themes based around the parks / characters / films etc rather than some obscure theme as food and wine?

bit strange in my view - but i am no expert :shrug:

this is the reason i am a little disappointed that i didnt get the chance to do the tot13k as it seems such a cool theme, if only they had replaced it with something else themed like this :(

I was a very competitive runner - ran all four years of high school varsity and college cross country and track all conference, only missing the second half of my final year due to a broken leg :cry: which was six months ago today actually. I plan on getting back into shape so I can run long distance again, specifically the coast to coast challenge, and was wondering how difficult it is to get into the WDW marathon and disneyland half? I know NYC you have like a 3 year waiting period unless you are lucky. I've been working out for the past month to get into shape and I start training again soon, as the doctor has given me clearance to run :sohappy: . By 2011, when I plan on running this, will I have trouble getting in or should I try to enter this upcoming year and get denied with hopes that I will have a better chance of getting in the following year?

No, the 2010 Marathon. This has really set me back.

Mmm, I got Swine Flu about two weeks ago. I run Cross Country and it was very hard to come back after having it. I was running about 23 minute 5k's before I got sick. Now I'm at about 25, it's hard but I'll keep working at it.

Good luck though! I hope you come back and be right where you were!

It's just first come first serve and a $125 entry fee (for the full). In perspective, the 2010 Marathon is only at 89%. The half has been full for months because more people want to run shorter distances.

As CaptainMichael said, the WDW races are first come first serve. As they start to fill up, they do post the percentages on the website. Initially the Goofy for this year filled up in a few weeks, but then they decided to add more spots and reopened it. But they usually are open for at least a few months.

There is no real registration for the coast to coast, they claim that the system will pick up on you being in both and give you the medal automagically I believe. Good luck with that goal, the DW didn't want to make the trip out to DL so I could get that extra bling. : (

FYI - NYC is a lottery system, unless you enter for so many years in a row and don't get picked, and then you get an automatic bid. Or, you can hit their pace and get in no problems. Boston is the only public marathon (I believe) that has a pacing requirement unless you get a charity slot.

I'm flying down in a week to do the TOT run and also go to MNSSHP for the first time; very excited!

I'll be sure to do a trip report when I return...
