DHS Disney Confirms Muppets Take Over Rock 'n' Roller Coaster at Hollywood Studios

Am I the only one getting “Journey Into Imagination with Figment” vibes here?
  • Beloved older parks attraction with special connection to park identity closes (figment and muppets) and are seemingly gone from park
  • Regulars and fans get ed and outcry happens
  • Disney hastily brings thing back but on the cheap as much as possible
I may be dooming, but idk. I have those vibes. I’ve seen this movie before. And I really don’t like how it ends.

I don't think we're getting any animatronics in the the Muppets retheme of RNRC. I'll be pleasantly surprised if there are, but that preshow already having been a screen gives them the opportunity to simply swap out the projector reel (actually, I assume it's digital at this point, right?). This is going to be a really quick turnaround with some aesthetic changes, but I'm not optimistic it's going to have animatronics. I actually think it's more likely we get MuppetVision back in Sunset Showcase than they produce new animatronics for this. I just don't see them investing that much here. Hope I'm wrong.

I don't really think there's much for Disney to say other than a closing date and maybe a hint new musical acts. It'll most likely be the same coaster/limos so the 'race through traffic' will probably be the plot of the actual coaster

They usually don't give closing dates of things at the events so likely more "positive news" of opening timeframe, the musical acts, maybe a bit on what to expect int he preshow/concept art of that

It would be a big plus if the preshow featured Muppet animatronics. That could end up being the highlight that people talk about. I'm not sure if the budget/timeframe allows, sadly. Fingers crossed.

The Muppets do lend themselves to a lot of cleverness and easter eggs in the queue, so there's potential for some really engaging material/environments there, too. Here's hoping they take this opportunity and execute it right. I'm cautiously optimistic since they do have some pressure on them from MV3D fans to deliver on a Muppet experience.

Let's also hope they fix the "using the outdoor switchback overflow queue for standby" issue. That has been a "weak link" in the RnRC experience since... well, most of its existence.

I am pessimistic - but maintaining hope - that they make the premise/execution of the load area and ride experience more immersive. The Six Flags -esque "pretend this obvious coaster train on a track is an automobile" and "pretend these two-dimensional, cartoon-style images are Los Angeles landmarks" is a relic of the Paul Pressler era and an embarrassment for a company whose claim to fame is immersion (even more so given the increasing quality of its competition). I suppose the un-realism of the Muppets characters at least lends itself to this conceit better, but I hope they can at least meet in the middle and make some level of improvement (and/or give it a better explanation).

I am cautiously optimistic about this one... Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem is a great choice, the characters are fun and quirky...Hopefully the Blacklight Sets will get a refresh and some extra added muppet goodness...and they do have some animatronic pieces that could be used in the pre and post show areas... Remember that our MV3D was the first of 2... Hopefully the animatronics and props from the DCA version are also packed away somewhere....

I think the loading area is the spot that could see the most changes and have the biggest impact in the "feel" of the ride changing.

Some animatronics in the preshow would be great - though not expecting anything major, but even some simple ones to add a little kinetic energy beyond the screen would be nice

Also would be fun if they had something relating back to "Chris" who Joe Perry asks to get his Les Paul and there is sometimes a cast member in there that plays the role of Chirs. Maybe could also tie back to Sweetums being a live figure at MV3D and have him in there doing stuff

Is “pretend this elementary school style model of a planet is actually a planet” any better?
I haven't been on GotG:CR and am staying spoiler-free (not looking and photos/videos), so it's possible I'd agree that that's weak as well, and that it should also be criticized (and two wrongs don't make a right!).

However, my general inclination is that obviously-fake versions of things we've all seen (buildings, street signs, trees...) are a bigger immersion-breaker than obviously-fake versions of "aspirational" things (e.g., celestial objects, rockets, etc.). I think it's much harder to suspend one's disbelief about the former.

Judson Green. Paul became President of Walt Disney Attractions at the end of 1998 but didn’t get the top chairman job until Green left in 2000. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster’s track was completed while Pressler was still at Disneyland opened in July 1999.

It would be nice if they actually built dimensional sets for the interior...but lit in the same way...There was a promotional video years ago that used to run on the TVs at the Disney resorts that showed a fully dimensional donut you go through on RNRR...But there is no dimensional donut....just a flat one.... I think Having a lot of these pieces redone as dimensional practical sets would add a whole lot to the experience....

TBA is still just Splash Mountain with non-functional AAs and a furry alligator.
well… yes and no.

Tianas is a completely different theme, name, and experience. It’s just the physical ride system is the same. Just like maelstrom and frozen.

That’s my point - this will still be called “rock n rollercoaster” - it’s the same ride title - which tells me it will be virtually the same experience.

If we’re going to post content from Tom Corless we should attribute said content to Tom Corless. Posting the content without attribution is pretty yuck.

Just for some brief very, very old context: there was a falling out with site administration and funnily in part due to a lack of attribution from Tom’s end. You’ll note you cannot actually post a link to his website. The site filters it out.

So that poster was doing the best attribution they ironically could. Not a moral judgement, the beef predates my join day and maybe even lurking.

The solution isn't to give Corless credit by name. The solution is to have it removed. The forum software automatically prevents posting links to his site, but can't look at a posted picture, know it's from his site, and automatically remove it.

That only happens when it's reported to the mods. The two of them don't read every post.

So, someone has to do the honors to report it. I'll let you do the honors since you're concerned about it.
