What do you guys think about colleges this fall? I wonder if I will be back on campus. Of course this has to happen during "the best years of my life" LOL

I work at a college in Academic Services. So far, I think everyone is planning to be back on campus. That doesn't mean things can't change. There have definitely been "what if" conversations among our staff regarding the fall. At this point and time, all we can do is stay inside and be hopeful that campuses will be allowed to reopen in the fall. I'm going to have some contingency plans in place for my department if we don't but I'm truly hoping we do as we're much more functional in person.

I don't think anyone deserves to experience hardship but from my experience when living in less than ideal conditions made me put on my big boy pants and made me a more determined person to keep fighting and not giving up.
Do you not realize that a lot of CPs have already experienced hardship?

I wasn’t gonna get personal but I was raised in an extreme religion- I call it a cult, because it fits the definition. I loved Disney and what it stood for but was told I could never pursue my dream or go to college. Finally broke free of that crap 2 years ago and never looked back. So yeah, i’d say losing all my childhood friends as well as the close relationship i had with my grandparents because of paltry religion was enough for me to put on my big girl britches. Getting into the DCP and working there was amazing. Being sent home sucked and I’m still upset over it. I have every right to be and I’m sick of others trying to invalidate that for me.

I’m sick and tired of the attitude that we’re not tough enough because we’re young, that we somehow need to prove ourselves. Yeah, hardship can make you stronger, but i don’t understand why you think this will be good for CPs, instead of possibly hitting someone who was already down. Our generation is more depressed and anxious. I already feel my anxiety rising over the past few weeks.
Losing your job beyond your control sucks. Working for a corporation and demanding bosses that demands and expects more from you in a very stressful environment, getting laid off and having 15 minutes to pack your things, not allowed to say your goodbyes and being escorted to your car by security to ensure you leave the company parking lot is not good too. It's all real world examples. Just keep fighting and not lose hope. Take care of your health because when your health declines, all bets are off. It is a lot more difficult handling stress when one is not healthy.

I agree with you on both of those points. Both of those situations are terrible. However I don’t think you’d tell the person who lost their office job that they just need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and get over it, essentially, because that would be unkind.

Ah. I see. So instead of a "college program," it was a "jobs program."

It was really what you made of it. I did it for the experience and the resume builder and the possibility of working for Disney. Others did it for college credit and for a “break” semester.

Considering how a good chunk of students don't actually finish 4-year degrees in 4 years these days, I guess it's not as important as it used to be.

Some make it sound like a working spring break... did you find it like that?

When was it more important?

So many people told me I was making a mistake by not going to college... it was one of the best choices I could have made. I jumped into the industry I wanted to be in and never looked back.

Others take a year off to travel the world... which is wonderful because it opens their eyes to different cultures and can help them when they return to classes... or it can help them to decide to pursue a different career.

There is no correct formula for life.

The Disney College Program is a great experience for many reasons.

Why don’t you?

He has lost his job and his apartment after just graduating most likely with tens of thousands in dollars in debt in the middle of a depression. I’m older, still have my job, but feel terrible for all those affected. You should try some empathy.
*beginning of arguably the worst depression in the history of our country

I’m currently taking 2 online classes this semester so I’m still working towards my degree. I’ve been working on my AA for a little over a year and I’m a little over halfway done. If I keep going I should finish this year and start my bachelors.

Even with school, I guess a working spring break is somewhat accurate. My classes aren’t demanding so most off days I was at the parks. I worked closing which worked nicely since I’m a night owl. Not every day was 100% fun (people can get VERY upset if you refuse alcohol, mainly because their ID isn’t valid or they don’t have it). I had a lot of fun but also felt like I was working towards my goals at the same time.

Thank you for your support. It means a lot to know not everyone is so callous.

Not like working with someone that expresses so little empathy. Good point and duly noted. However working in the brutal corporate world, that is not reality.

Oh I completely understand that in the working world, this is uncommon. However in my experience my favorite bosses and the ones I work harder for are the ones that actually give a crap about the people that they work with. Caring about your employees as people-rather than work robots-goes a really long way.

My uncle’s company is giving each employee a $500 stimulus on top of what they’re already receiving from work and they just announced a 3% bonus for hourly employees on top of that. Granted, he works for a company where their services are in high demand right now, but the expanded profits are going straight to the employees, not the board. That’s a company I respect and would want to work harder for- because they really care about their employees and want to make sure they come out the other end of this alright.

I'm doing supply chain management so I should be fine. Also learning some trade skills, while I'm home from college I'm working on some house construction.
You've got the right attitude. In my younger days, I hustled working during school, winter, spring, summer break. Missed out on some fun but no regrets. Earnings helped pay down debt, regular expenses and started saving for the future. A number of my peers just complained and didn't hustle and work hard.

Well, I would never want to work for someone who expresses so little empathy towards others. I didn’t post that story for pity or to whine. I posted it because I thought it might make others understand that we’re not all kids coasting off our parent’s money and that everyone’s lives- including those who are young -are complex. Apparently I was wrong.

I’d like to point out that your generation didn’t have social media because you were somehow morally superior and didn’t choose to have it. It hadn’t been invented yet, and if your generation did have it, you would be just the same as ours.

Also, you don’t get over depression or anxiety by getting over yourself. I hope you’ve never had to deal with someone with either of those issues because it is absolutely the wrong way to address it and could lead to their condition worsening.

I think I’ve made my point and this is the last I’m responding to you.

You’ve demonstrated far more dignity and maturity than those here who think they have something to teach you (they don’t). Be proud of what you’ve achieved, and good luck moving forward—I hope you get a second shot at Disney one day.
