Perhaps because originally the NAACP had promised to organize a protest, not because of the story itself but because of the way the young white boy is portrayed compared to the portrayal of the young black boy.... In addition, they found the stereotypical role of Uncle Remus as the "happy slave" objectionable. The NAACP has since said it would NOT support or organize such a protest, but Disney executives have felt that this does not mean other groups won't protest. In addition, there are feelings that the film, though valuable in many ways as a social document of America for the time it was made, is not socially sensitive and could be misinterpreted, putting the company in a negative light. While Disney has not abandoned the characters of Brer Rabbit, Brer Bear, Brer Fox and company, it has not released the film in America. However, the film is available in Europe and those who wish to own a copy could (for a hefty price) buy a PAL copy with a NTSC copy from an overseas distributor completely legally. :)

How's that?

Carl Barks created him for a comic book, "Christmas on Bear Mountain" in 1947 when he was looking for a stingy relative. Scrooge McDuck became a staple of Barks's comics, and McDuck made his first on-screen appearance in 1967 in "Scrooge McDuck and Money."
