Disney and Pittsburgh

Well, Randy Pausch (a famous former professor at Carnegie Mellon) was a huge Disney fan and always dreamed of being an imagineer and did become one. In addition, CMU's Entertainment Technology Center produces a lot of students who eventually go on to work in the theme park industry. Even still, Jesse Schell (graduate of CMU and faculty at the ETC) owns a company called Schell Games, based in Pittsburgh, which produced both Toontown Online and the game seen in Toy Story Midway Mania.

When father is talking about how their radio picks up news from all over.
How about that... I never even noticed it although I know the scene you are talking about. I guess if I had some connection to Pittsburgh I would have noticed... but, alas I do not. Thanks for the response.

Aside from the connection to CMU and the KDKA reference, Pittsburgh (and Cleveland) seem to be commonly used in TV shows and movies when they need to mention some random city in unimportant dialogue (occasionally in a mocking tone given both city's rust belt troubles). I think it is because they are large enough places to be heard of by the masses but are the types of places that few who aren't from there tend to go, at least in the minds of people from NYC, Miami, and LA. As someone who lives in the Midwest and has been to both cities recently, I can tell you that the old, burned out image that people have of both cities is totally inaccurate.

What did Pittsburgh ever do to Disney? Just joking here, but Pittsburgh was mentioned in the Muppets show and in the Carousel of Progress. Any ideas as to why?
Pittsburgh is also mentioned in The American Experience and there is a barrel marked Pittsburgh on the dock of the Riverboat in MK. There was one more we noticed on our last trip too but I can't recall. We were amazed that Pittsburgh was mentioned 5 times in Disney in some way shape or form.
