Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

That's the part that worries me too. This summer's box office is disastrous, but what's the course correction to that?

They need to slash their mega-budgets ASAP, but even if they did that they still will lose money on these types of films. Just less of it.

So what's the executive course correction plan to fix the product itself, not just the bloated and irresponsible budgets?
They have an oligarchic egomaniac at the top who inhales his own ether…

Only one way to fix that?

And you know how it got here? Fake money and unwarranted fan praise without conditions

If this really is happening—and I don’t believe it is—Disney shouldn’t respond at all. There’s no turning the clock back, and appeasing those who can’t handle change is a losing strategy in the long term.

The issue seems to be how should Disney place and market its products for families today.

Disney's recent strategy of trying to appease everyone by including 2 second background Lesbian kisses in Lightyear or non-sexual but overtly gay teen romances in Strange World didn't work. It upset a lot of parents who stayed away from those products, and upset the Silver Lake Brunch Crowd who work for Disney and creates those products. The Bud Light analogy couldn't be more apt regarding the disdain many Disney employees now have for their longtime core customers. There are plenty of Alissa Heinerscheid types in Burbank it seems.

Disney wrangled a weak win for itself on that by appeasing its boisterous employees doing messy "Walkout" campaigns, but that win was just as fleeting as the Comp Day they used for it was. And their box office results are still awful.

It seems to me Disney has two choices right now after this disastrous box office summer:
  1. Fix their creative direction that has brought them box office misery.
  2. Just keep going and hope that the Minivan Costco Crowd will finally relent and obey the Silver Lake Brunch Crowd and buy Disney media again without hesitation.
I would add that the bloated mega-budgets HAVE to be reeled in immediately, but that's obvious just from factual data.

If there's some other strategy you or anyone else can suggest for how Disney fixes this mess they're in, I'd love to hear it.

Puppy dogs. Kitty cats. Chocolate pudding. Ferris wheels. Must not get lured into ridiculous arguments and get another totally stupid ban again right before my Disneyland trip because I will be needing advice from this board. Bunny rabbits. Fresh fruit. A day at the ocean. Blue sky.😜

Or don’t get banned by getting personal when it’s not personal

Like a cartoon remake

That's a valid point. Although some of us are so old we still think of TV as where you can't say a bad word, and movies as where you can say whatever bad words you want and even show topless ladies. But obviously, it's not 1980 any longer at "TV" now means streaming for most folks.

The overseas market has been awful for Disney's films. Instead of making more money overseas than they do domestically, some of their recent films have made less overseas than their already modest-to-miserable domestic box office. That used to be unheard for Disney films. They should be making at least 50% more overseas than they do domestically.

The exception this summer is Guardians 3, and Elemental. But Guardians still only made $57 Million globally, and Elemental is going to lose around $100 Million globally.

Now don't everyone freak out here because I included two non-Disney films in this data, because I just want to show how Disney films are faring poorly overseas compared to their most relevant competition; Indy vs. M:I and Mermaid vs. Barbie. Plus I included Guardians 3 and Elemental to show that even better performing Disney films are faring poorly overseas than they historically would have.

Foreigners overseas seem to have more of a problem with Disney's big movies than Americans do. Yankee, er, Mickey Go Home???

Who needs Variety and Hollywood Reporter any more when we can depend on this. 😬

This is not an airport security line. This is a line to get popcorn and soda at Barbenheimer in Times Square.

No one said Elemental was a part of a franchise. What my post did state

Indy
Ant man
HM
Elemental.
All of them were the start of or a continuing tent pole budget franchise of now what?
I am not going to talk in circles on this…it is a waste of time… because the posters here clearly have an anti-Disney bias here… they will go on and on about Indy budget and losses…but MI is doing just fine

You quoted where I said was a tent pole continuation or the attempted start of a new one. Elemental would certainly get a sequel if the film did well. You just quoted me accurately but missed that part. No circle talking. Even if you don't like thinking that they would certainly make a sequel. It's a red herring to the point:

I don't think anyone said MI 7 would do fine earning money for the company to earn profit. They said, including me that globally it was not going to lose the amount Indy 5 did. Which is a fact.

Not at all. If this were a Paramount forum (and Paramount still owned King's Island and Carowinds, I guess?) we'd be talking about how miserable M:I has done. Because it has done just as bad domestically as Indy 5.

What is interesting though is how badly Disney's movies are performing overseas this summer, compared to their other competition in similar movie categories;

Indy 5 Overseas Box Office = 112% of Domestic Box Office
Mission: Impossible Overseas Box Office = 221% of Domestic Box Office

Mermaid Overseas Box Office = 89% of Domestic Box Office
Barbie Overseas Box Office = 121% of Domestic Box Office (Not open yet in all overseas markets)

Foreigners aren't fans of Disney tentpole movies lately, to an even bigger extent than Americans.

Why are you people so obsessed about how much money a movie makes? Shouldn’t it just be about your favorite movies? I’ve seen almost every single movie this summer and most of threm have been wonderful. Insidious- Red Door was the exception. Patrick Wilson is a good actor, but Burbank (I said Burbank!!!!!!!) should not let him direct again. Looking forward to Last Voyage of the Demeter and Strays.

Well now we are shifting a discussion. I love discussing merits of a film(s) and subjectivity.
But this is a thread titled Disney Box Office about box office challenges.
I am sorry you do not like the thread direction. Reviewing a film's qualities would be a different discussion and thread.
I want Last Voyage of the Demeter as a HHN house! So I look forward.to speaking of that in an appropriate thread.

LOL. Did you just seriously call me out about not posting Disney box office challenges when half of the last few pages has been about Barbie??

The red herring introduction of "Did you seriously" gets old. How dare I answer your question?
All I did was respond to what you asked. Which was why we were so intent on discussing how much money movies make in a box office based thread.

You are in New York, stop, you know the deal. Movies are vehicles to make money.
