I should again reiterate that I am biased and hate Comcast. However I do want a deal with Comcast that gives back all the Marvel movie rights Universal has, the use of the Marvel name in US themeparks and Hulu. I have no problem with Universal keeping the rights to Spiderman and Hulk rides in Orlando. Disney has to continue to fo business with Comcast as they are the largest cable company. The two companies need each other in that area as Disney has so many channels that Comcast customers demand and Disney needs to reach. But I want Disney to get Sky too. In any case if Comcast were to offer anything close to £17.00 I would let them have it if the other deals could be worked out.

The Marvel theme park rights is just East Coast though isn't it? There is a Marvel land coming to Disneyland California in 2020. I would like to see Marvel come to WDW and them gain the film distribution rights to Hulk back.

They can't use the name, but they can use the characters.
And besides, we all know everyone is just going to call it marvel land no matter what.
Just like Galaxy’s Edge will be ‘Star Wars Land’ to the masses

2019 Guest- “I’m looking for Star Wars Land?”
CM- “this is the Magic Kingdom, you can find Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios”
Guest- “Okay but where’s Star Wars Land?”

I am fully expecting my friend over at guest relations to get that question 20 times a day, and I’m sure the same thing will happen at Disneyland for GE and Marvel

These unaltered star wars movies are the one thing I actually believe when Disney and Lucasfilm saythat they are not going to touch them (and get a major cash in) I really believe they want to get as far away from the the non Disney films asap

That would be the first time in decades that people actually want to pay for a new version of these films, rather than a slightly higher resolution. Given that they restored most of the films already for the BD releases and fan projects have 35mm scans of everything else they pretend is missing, this wouldn't be too much of a heavy lift in a 12 disc ultimate Skywalker box set.

If they do a full Skywalker Trilogy of Trilogies box set, I would really love for both the originals remastered and the CGI in the Special Editions to be 're-rendered' with modern assets. (I'm sure that is probably the wrong terminology). I like much of what is in the updated version of the Special Editions, but the CGI is bad. (I'm curious to see how all late 90's and 2000's CGI is handled over time. It seems like it would be a relatively inexpensive operation to update it to match the current resolutions, or could/would they even re-animate some of the CGI to improve the connection between CGI characters and the actors.)

I can't imagine Disney won't do something here, likely both before and after Episode IX comes out.

It just seems so odd to think of Disney owning most of 20th Century Fox. I guess if I forget about Fox network and Fox news it's a smart move (to now own a lot of content; plus varying other reasons behind the deal). I know those are obviously not included, but it's just hard to imagine Fox+Disney, LOL. It's hard to separate the studio from the networks.

Hmm... You know that’s how I took it, but you are correct it’s never specified which version got restored.
Disney/lucasfilm have said they won't release the original cuts because the special editions are Georges vision. There were articles about it a few years ago when rumors of the original cuts on Blu-ray circulated. I won't buy the originals in HD until its the ORIGINALS.

I thought the special editions were updated to have Han shoot first again? (or am I imagining that)
That's wishful thinking. As you said, the 1997 special edition was the worst, but despite tweaks in 2004 and 2011, Han still hasn't been restored to his original 1977 badass glory.

If you want to see the best possible versions of the originals, search for Harmy's Despecialized Edition.

It's interesting that the special editions, with their modern effects, have aged quicker than the original films. It's a big reason I'm happy to see them using so many practical effects in the new films.

I believe it has been clarified that the 4K version is the special edition, however there's no reason they can't restore the original at some point. If a group of fans can do it (see the 4K77 project), Lucasfilm can do it. There's no way they haven't preserved an original film negative.

I've never been 100% clear on who has the right to release any given version of the original Star Wars. Fox owns the original film, but Lucasfilm has clearly dictated which version is released and when. If Fox owned the movie outright, surely they would have released an unaltered version in recent years, it's free money.

The internet has made the issue largely moot in any case. High quality versions of the original film are not hard to find.
