Discovery Island

I remember being told by a CM at the WL that with the opening of AK there was no longer a need for this.

I actually never knew the the Island existed until after it had closed. It was actually due to a thread on this site about a year ago. From what I have heard, once AK opened all the animals were moved there and there was no use for the island. I know that somewhere I have much more information on this, I just need to find it. Let me get back to you, but you can try to do a thread search and find it yourself, but I doubt it would come up.

In the end it was small, not terribly popular and overpriced and as others have already said, sort of pointless with the addition of AK. If I remember correctly, most of the visitors were coming from the nearby resorts and were getting in for free with their resort packages.

I actually just found out about this today while doing a search for "extinct" disney atractions. I was looking forward to it when I return to the WL in October. *Sigh* A little-known disney secret that will be missed. :(

No, it closed with the opening of DAK I beleive which was 1998, I think RC closed in 2001... correct me if I am wrong. The animals there now have homes at DAK.

DIscovery Island did close after AK opened. They moved the animals there. Mainly it was birds.

I loved the island. I went many times for many years. We always knew when to go.

We'd go when they were feeding the Pelicans, my boys got to feed them fish many times and loved the experience. I cherished the Island as a child and was glad to have shared it with my boys. I wish it was still there but I love the AK so I am happy.

It was a wonderful day away to go to the island and walk around. It really was the most beautiful, quiet place in all of WDW in my opinion. It is definately missed.

I loved Discovery Island, after a few hours at River Country in the afternoon I would always hop on the boat to the island. It was a nice break I will tell you, the one thing I loved is that they did not require shirts at DI and I would just go over there in my Speedo. There is not a better feeling in the World then walking in the shade after a few hours in the hot sun.

I thought I had heard a rumor way back of them trying to build a "MYST ISLAND" based on the popular computer game...I don't know if this ever made it off of the "Hey, maybe we could..." stage or not though.

Anyone ever hear of this or am I just completely insane?

They year it closed we were talking to some CM's we've known for years and they had said something about that as well. They also said there was some talk about making it a wedding island. You get the drift.

I'd love for them to do something with the island again. I really miss that beautiful getaway.

Freak,

I don't think those are mutually exclusive concepts.

However - I remember reading about that some time ago, but I recall that the idea was scrapped because they couldn't come to any solid financial model.

Ok...as long as I'm only insane on the "Freak" level and not insane because I'm thinking I heard stuff that I didn't :)

(Sounded like it would've been a really cool idea...too bad :( )

Hello,

I think it would be a great place for Disney to build a new five star restuarant. Can you picture taking a boat to the island and watching the fireworks and water pagent while eatting a fancy six or seven course meal?????

Sounds very romantic to me.

When I was last at AK in 2001, the CM there said that there was plans to build a honeymoon type resort on the Island where guests havw their own little cabin type thing - sounds cool to me!
