Disappointed with AK restaurant choices

I am trying to figure out where my family of 4 (all adult prices) can affordably have lunch at AK. Tusker House used to be our place, but now the price doesn't fit into the budget. I am looking for counter service. My kids aren't fans of barbeque, I am just looking for normal American fare. Sure seems like the pickin's are slim there. Any suggestions? Are there any stands that sell hot dogs or anything like that? The place in Dinoland just sells happy meals I think, and my kids are beyond that (teens). The Yak and Yeti only gets so-so reviews, and I'm not a big fan of Chinese, so typical hamburgers and chicken are usually the route we go. :shrug: We may have to leave property and go to the McDonalds but that would be my last choice, I'd prefer to stay in AK if possible.

I can't really give you any detailed advice but I'm sure that I've had typical American food from AK before. You have the Rain Forest Cafe at the entrance to AK (not counter service but more like what your looking for).

My husband and I feel the same way. We were SO disappointed that Tusker House was closed for the refurbishment when we were there in October. It was my family’s favorite counter service of all 4 parks. I will miss it the way it was, though we will try it out during our September trip.
What about Pizzafari? That is an option for those who want an inexpensive meal but don’t want McD or BBQ.

There's always Pizzafarri.
Yak and Yeti has burgers and Chicken bites on the kids menu.
The Dino Diner in Dinoland has hot dogs.

I have always wanted to really like the Rainforest, but it just seems like every time we go I feel like things are overpriced for what you get, and the service hasn't been that great.
There are some good suggestions here, though.

There aren't any burgers on the Yak & Yeti adult menu. The honey chicken is good though, its just the regular Disney chicken nuggets in a honey sauce over some white rice.

Don't give up on Flame Tree BBQ.
There are items on the menu other than BBQ.

Like-

Smoked 1/2 Chicken served with baked beans and corn muffin
Beef or Pork Sandwich served with baked beans
Smoked Turkey Breast Sandwich - sliced turkey breast served on a multi-grain bun with cole slaw

The seating area there is nice. Multiple levels under the trees, overlooking the lake.
It's behind the stand where you order.

Also-
Restaurantosaurus has more than Happy Meals.
They also have-

Dino-Size Double Cheeseburger - and fries
Cheeseburger with fries
Add Bacon, if desired
Hot Dogosaurus - hot dog with fries

Keep in mind that Yak and Yeti is owned by the same company as Rainforest so if you think they are overpriced you might think that Yak and Yeti is as well. :wave:

I would suggest pizzafari or if that's not your taste why not pop over to the Animal Kingdom Lodge and used their quick service. It's called Mara.

I'm not a big fan of AK restaurants, and Tusker House was my favorite as well.

We ate at Restaurantasaurus last time around. It has one huge advantage during the summer -- air conditioning. Don't underestimate the importance. There is McD's food there, but I think the burgers and hot dogs were regular burgers and dogs, so that might be a good choice for you.

For good counter-service food, I can recommend Flame Tree barbecue. The seating area, although outside, is pleasant, particular if you continue on to the far areas that are along the water.

We go for 2 reasons - KS and E:E. Everything else is just filler, but those 2 things are worth getting up for, imo. Still we don't usually stay past 2:30. The atmosphere at AK is great, just wish there was more substance.

Boy that's the truth - I ate what my mom said we were eating or I didn't eat - end of story. But sometimes the endless whining from the 2 girls is sooo draining that it's not worth the fight.

To be serious, yes theres a shock, we have found the continued menu pruning to accommodate the boring burger and nugget eaters to be a growing problem and concern. Infact it is one reason that on this years trip we have ditched the dinning plan and will be eating off site more often.

Unless there's a change I haven't heard of, the counter service at Restaurantasaurus IS McDonalds. That's what it was the time we visited, and that's what it still says in the 2008 guidebook I bought.

Give me a break! First of all, your parents didn't raise in 2007. The world changes. If anyone needs an attitude adjustment, it's you! Your posts are the first I've seen on this site that are snarky and scolding.

How sad! I thought this site was different!
