Disappointed by Academy Snubbing Disney this year

Congrats to Brad Bird and the Pixar team for the win. But I was really disappointed that more trophies were not claimed. I really think that it was unfair for Alan Menken to get snubbed for his most brilliant songwriting work since the 1990's with this year's Enchanted.

How can you get three of the five original song nominations, and still get snubbed? I was not at all impressed by the performance of the winning song this evening. Yes it is a testament to independent artists... but where else are you going to find these two writers? The song was not creative and was just a simple 4-note phrase duet.

I think that Ratatouille, despite its nominations in other categories, is stuck in the same rut that other animated films have been put in. Because it is an animated film and it has its own category, it won't get the votes for other awards for live action films other than original score and best song.

I know my ramblings are only based on my opinion and cannot be called objective observations. But neither are the choices by the members of the Academy. The snub for Enchanted and Alan Menken's work really rubbed me the wrong way.

I completely agree with you (although I was very disappointed that Amy Adams did not sing "That's How You Know"). Also, I was shocked that Pirates didn't win for best digital effects.

It's hard to feel sorry for Disney since they had a hand in so many otherr awards. Since Disney owns Miramax and Miramax made No Country for Old Men, Disney will just have to settle for winning Best Picture and Best Director instead of the best song or best score. I haven't seen Enchanted but based on last nights performances, the songs don't seem to be that memorable anyway atleast not on the level of Beauty or Little Mermaid.

Again, its only my opinion, but I don't see how that small of a song from the movie "Once" could be better than any of the three tunes that Menken was nominated for.

Also note that despite the award winning singers that did the tunes last night, their performances did not match the quality from the movie. I too wish that Amy Adams performed it last night.

Also, in general, I was surprised that none of the "Big movies" got kudos for their editing and special effects. (transformers, Spidey, and Pirates)

Maybe Hollywood is starting to look away from the films that keep business good for them

I was also very disappointed that "That's how you know" from Enchanted didn't win the Oscar for best song...I loved the movie and I think the songs are all amazing, especially that one! I also don't understand why Amy Adams didn't get to sing it, I didn't really like the interpretation given at last night ceremony...

I'm going to preface this by saying how much I love Enchanted, and I think that Amy Adams deserves all the accolades that can be thrown upon her. I plan on buying the DVD when it comes out, and considering my self-imposed DVD buying restrictions (2 every 6 months, my collection is out of control!) That means something.

But, "Falling Slowly." Wow... I had never heard the song before the Academy Awards, but I'm glad that I know of it now, because, its amazing. It's minimalistic in style, but I can't say that I disagree with the Academy, the songs in Enchanted are fun, catchy, and in "So Close"'s case, pretty darn moving. But in the end, they are pretty much the kind of wonderful fluff that Alan Menken (and the late Howard Ashman) are known for. He writes wonderful music, which can convey emotion, and some complicated orchestral bits, but "Falling Slowly"

Wow...

I agree with you.

Does anyone know why she didn't sing it? :veryconfu I wish that Enchanted would have won an Oscar for any of the three songs nominated. Having three nominations is really good and says a lot for one movie to have those nominations.

Also, Pirates should have won best digital effects. It was beautiful.

Yeah, I was more shocked by Pirates not winning for best SFX also. Those have to be some of the best SFX ever put on the screen and the golden compass effects were average at best.

The Academy as of late seems to have had a real quirky taste when it comes to music. Do you remember the wonderful toe tapping number from last year?

It's Tough to be a Pimp  :brick:

They still fall back on Disney when they need entertainment however! Three numbers performed, although I could have done without the singing in "So Close"

Worse travesties have occurred at the Academy Awards. How long did it take for Scorsese to win Best Director? Disney got an award for Ratatouille, which was well deserved in my mind.

Yeah, Pirates should have totally won best Visual Effects. I mean, not including stuff like Davy Jones and his crew, Shipwreck Cove, falling over the waterfall or all the other scenes, the movie should have won for the Maelstrom scene alone. They probably should have won for Best Make-Up as well.

She didn't sing it, because she doesn't have the strongest voice and that's one of the hardest songs in the movie. The working song is a lot easier on the voice. In the movie, you can put together different recordings, but it's a whole different ballgame on live TV. Plus, singing two songs in one night, especially for someone who might not be used to it, is very difficult. (There was a whole debate about this over on imdb)

And I agree with all of you, especially for Enchanted. First, Amy Adams doesn't get the nomination for Best Actress. Then, when it had a 60% chance of winning it still loses. In my opinion, "That's How You Know" is one of the best songs I've heard in a long time. Now, I haven't heard the other songs, but still.

I guess, the Academy just doesn't like Disney. But who could ever not like Disney.

Ahem. Life doesn't revolve around everything Disney. :lookaroun

:shrug::lol::lookaroun

My only issue was with the visual effects award, which clearly belonged to either Transformers or PotC. But hey....

Stewart should come back next year. He made the show very enjoyable.

But why did Kristen Chenowith sing it? Did she have any connection to the movie at all? I was confused by that.

I don't actually know the answer to that question, but I can make an educated guess. She's a pretty famous Tony Award winner with an amazing voice. She's also known for having a bubbly pesonality, so they probably thought she was a lot like Giselle. I, personally love her, and I would prefer her than Beyonce or some other singer who's big right now. (Nothing against Beyonce of course)

And to add to my first post: I just read that Amy didn't want to see do two songs, because it was going to be nerve-wrecking enough, so she asked that someone else do it. I'm not sure if that's true, but I've seen it in a few places.

I think the Oscars this year was, overall, quite boring. This year was one of the lowest viewed Oscars, next to 2003. I wasn't really all excited with Jon Stewart either.

I also agree regarding Disney and the Awards. They defenitely should've received more recognition then what they did get.

MSN Movies even recognized the "Enchanted" Music situation.

That's just mean: Amy Adams offers to sing one of the songs from "Enchanted" and they send her out in front of the entire world all by herself without even a single backup dancer? And then Kristin Chenoweth (tone it down, girl) follows with a whole musical number for another song from the movie? Bad form, Academy, bad form.

To begin with, Enchanted shouldn't have received all of those nominations. Yes, the movie is good, as well as the music, but it didn't deserve 3 nominations in this category.

There were plenty if songs that deserved to get nominated. First, there's the song "Gauranteed" by Eddie Vedder from the film "Into the Wild." It should've been nominated and it should've won. Shakira's song "Despedida" from the film "Love in the Time of Cholera" shoud've been nominated as well.

However, the song from "Once" deserves the award when compared to the other nominees. It's such as beautiful song from a great film. You should watch it.

These "Enchanted" songs are not memorable. They are not like other classic Disney songs: "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," Under the Sea," "A Whole New World," etc.

I love Disney to death, but some of you are just blinded by the magic. Some of you need to get down from that Disney cloud every once in a while. Just because it's a Disney song, it doesn't mean it should win. I'm not trying to offend anyone, but Enchanted got what it deserved.... nothing.

I think "That's How You Know" is going to become one of those classic songs. You just have to give it a few years.

And Disney consistently gets snubbed by the Oscars. And the kid movie argument doesn't hold water with me, because Johnny Depp didn't when for Pirates 1, which was one of the best acting jobs I've seen. Then again, they never give Johnny the Oscar.

The fact is movies that usually do well at the box office now a days don't when Oscars. Yes, I know there are exceptions. Out of nowhere The Bourne Ultimatum one some, but generally it's the small obscure movies that most people haven't seen and/or don't even know about.
