Dining question

I know this has probably been asked before but in order to do the disney dining plan do you have to be staying on disney property?
The DDP is available ONLY as part of a package that includes a stay at a WDW owned-and-operated resort and at least a 1-day park admission.

DDP is a function of resort reservations. Therefore, it isn't available if you're not staying at a WDW resort.

To confirm...

CleveRocks is correct. The Disney Dining Plan is not sold separately and can be included in only one of two ways...

The Magic Your Way Plus Dine Package - Including a stay at a Disney owned and operated resort, a Magic Your Way Theme Park Ticket of your choice, and the Disney Dining Plan for the length of your stay. Everyone in the room must be on the same vacation package and choose the same ticket length and options. This package must be booked at least 3 days prior to arrival.

A Disney Vacation Club Member Points Stay Plus Dine- The Guest must be staying at a Walt Disney World Disney Vacation Club Property using membership points. The dine plan must be added to their points stay reservation by contacting DVC Membership Services at least 3 days prior to arrival. Everyone in the room must add the dine plan for their entire length of stay.

Yes, you must be staying on Disney owned property in order to participate in the DP. I had to break this to my boss who likes to go for 10-12 days but her and her family never stayed on property. Maybe this will be her incentive to do so.

The only difference for DVC is that you don't have to pay for the DDP till you arrive at you resort and check in, and you don't have to buy a park ticket.
