Dining Plan History

What were the previous dining plans WDW offered? I recall family members getting some sort of option in the 90's and feeling like it was a good deal. Our 1st trip was 2002 and 1st on property stay was 2005 so I have only seen the current plan.
Just curios with so much hate of the DDP and ADR situation...
Thanks:)

We went in 2005 and had the version then. We had one QS, one Snack and one TS but the TS included an appetizer, main and dessert for each person and tips were included in the much cheaper price.

With the previous Dream Maker packages, there were silver, gold, and platinum options, as well as food and fun. All involved prepayment for food and recreation.

The first dining plan (as they are now) included appetizers, meals, desserts, tax and tip for everyone. It was a much better deal and they still hadn't jacked up the cost of all meals to make it seem like you we're getting more than you are, lol.

A year or two later, they started the "free" dining. I think the first one was offered in the fall.

I did the first one, the first time it was offered...but I found it to be a bigger pain than I ever wanted to deal with again and kind of stopped paying attention, so that's all the history I know.

The reason I don't like the plans is that they raised all the menu prices to make it seem like such a great deal, so if you're paying cash, it's even more expensive. Also, most restaurants took some good stuff off the menus, so a couple of my favorites disappeared. Finally, people have gone insane with reservations because they want to get the most out of their plan (I don't blame them for that), so it makes it harder to walk-up and get a table. Those are my personal beefs with it, not necessarily everyone's!

Every year I did the Dining Plan since 2010...but I have noted that the ADR rate has increased, and walk ups are nearly impossible to get (though, in 2011 I was turned away from Coral Reef even though I was willing to wait, walked over to the birds, called in and booked an ADR for an hour later, and was allowed in)...

I do enjoy paying for it all up front and not having "sticker shock" at every meal.

I do NOT enjoy being locked out of dining options because people have gone slap happy with ADRs.

On some other Dis board people brag about having booked a different resturaunt in each park for breakfast, lunch and dinner. So know matter where ther decide to go or when they want to so table service they have a place. It's disgusting!

That it is. It's selfish and rude. Frankly, I'd like it if they just got rid of free ADRs altogether.

I booked a ton of ADRs my last trip (after being locked out of most Table Service in 2011 due to the big Free Dining push in the spring of that year which meant people were locking up the restaurants)...

So, in 2012, I booked a TON of ADRs (all single meals, not hoarding like you suggested)...and I hated how it locked down our vacation.

We couldn't just enjoy the parks, we had to rush off to our ADRs!

Not doing it this year. I booked ADRs that are special to us that I really want to do, and if we don't get to eat a lot of Table Service, the kid won't care anyhow. And, on my next trip, I may not pay the premium for the deluxe plan again...as it's lost value.

Yep. We pay OOP, and we will not be doing any TS this time, other than a few character meals. It's too expensive and generally not worth the price. We'll be scouting out the good QS!

Can you do that? I thought that it only let you book one ADR per meal time.

Thanks:)

WDW offered dining plans for a while without really publicizing them. Prior to the MYW package with the DDP we all know and love/hate, they offered plans that were much more like the Premium (https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/vacation-packages/2013/premium/) and Platinum (https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/vacation-packages/2013/platinum/). And up until they changed to require a 3 day stay, those 2 packages could most definitely be made to work in your favor. They basically turned WDW into an all inclusive resort type stay for the few that knew about them, and were able to pay for them.

And as a PP indicated, TS meals used to include App, Entree, Dessert, Drink and tip, but they have since removed the App and tip, while increasing the cost of the plan.

Can you do that? I thought that it only let you book one ADR per meal time.

You have Johnny book a set under his email, Susy books a set under her email, Mom and Dad each do the same as well. As long as you don't try to tie them into the MDE/FP+/Whatever we are calling it now, the system views them as separate. Remember that WDW still has to allow for off-site guests to book ADRs, and WDW knows nothing about them.

You can't really blame the DDP for ADR hoarding, that's all the human factor. People will always try to "hoard" things when they think there's a chance that others might cut into "their" slice of the pie, so to speak. Selfishness is the rule for the day and it's all about me, me, me.

I can't remember the years but the dining plan option around like 2005 or something like that included a snack, counter service and table service and the table service had a app, entree, dessert and gratuity.

We had free Dining in 06, 07, 09, 10. I do remember the tip and appetizer being included and it was a lot of food. Was more curious about the pre DDP. Thanks for the imput:)

We did a dining plan on our honeymoon in September 2000. I don't remember the cost. I remember that we got appetizer meal and dessert at them all. It was breakfast lunch and dinner every day, any place you wanted. We only made 1 ADR before we went and that was for CRT. We made others either day before or day of and even then I think we only booked Le Cellier Artist Point & Yachtsmen Steakhouse (can you tell we love our steaks). We did a few of character meals as walk ups, like Crystal Palace and Liberty Tree Tavern. We were at WL and I know we did breakfast every morning at WCC and never made a reservation
