Can you imagine going from Iraq to WDW? God bless America!!

That's exactly what my fiance did. He and I went to WDW in September of 2004 for 2 weeks R&R. We loved it there. SOG is a nice resort. The rooms have 2 queen beds and a pull out couch. Our room had a blacony that overlook one of the golf courses. It was so beautiful. The price wasn't that bad either. For an 11 night stay is was around $550. The price/night is based on your rank in the military.

It's funny, you don't hear much about this place if you aren't in any military circles. I was a CM on the WDW College Program in 1997 and barely knew this place existed...

I knew it was there and only military personel and their families were able to stay, but I had no idea it was actually owned by Uncle Sam.

What a great idea. From the sounds of the article, it sounds like Disney would have likely razed the building(s) otherwise, so it's really a win-win situation for everyone. Especially since no tax dollars were spent on it.

I can't even imagine all the horrible crap these servicemen and women go through, so it's nice for them to have a couple places like this to unwind a bit.

The sentence about the military staff who have just returned from combat, "the stare" really tore at my heart. No matter how people may feel about what is happening in Iraq, there are Americans there fighting and suffering and they deserve our support. If ANYONE deserves a nice, long, relaxing Disney vacation at a reasonable price - it's THEM!

Actually, a lot of civilian DoD employees, NOAA, Public Health Service, Ready Reserve and many other Federal employees may use the facility. I've stayed there before.

We just got back from Staying at Shades of Green yesterday. This was my families first trip to Walt Disney World and my first time in several decades. We throughly enjoyed the stay there. It was great being able to be able to stay there. My husband is soon to be leaving on his third deployment overseas and we always try to get a good family trip in to help while he's gone.
The rooms were very spacious, everyone was very nice and helpful there. We were able to utilize the extra magic hours, the package delivery service for our purchases at the parks as well as free parking in the parks on the few times we drove instead of using the provided SOG or Disney transportation.
The pull out bed was just as comfortable to my kids as the queen size and they were actually fighting over who got to sleep there each night.

It's nice to see someone cares and supports the troups other than the families of those troups. My husband was in during Desert Storm (remember that, about 15 years ago? It started on my daughter's 2nd birthday) and my brother just returned from Iraq. I know how hard it is on them and the families. Places like this are needed. We never stayed there, but I've been trying to talk my brother into taking his family there. His wife and kids have never been to WDW.
