DHS to Get the DCA Treatment?

Orlando: So Value-Engineered

Who is also paying attention to Anaheim’s radical attendance shift are the executives in Orlando. Imagineering, buoyed by the huge success of DCA’s extreme makeover, has put together a proposal to do the same type of massive multi-year makeover for the floundering Disney Hollywood Studios park out in Disney World. It may not get the nearly 1.5 Billion that was spent on DCA from 2007 to 2012 (with Midway Mania, Pixar Play Parade, and World of Color paid for separately and on top of the 1.2 Billion dedicated to the makeover), but Imagineering would love to tear in to DHS and give the muddled theme of that park a fresh start and new look, bolstered with at least one new mega E Ticket and a smattering of smaller rides.

Wish them luck though, as the TDO executives are already inquiring how the park makeover can be value engineered, what might be eliminated, and how it could all be stretched out over more fiscal years than WDI’s bold 3 year extreme makeover proposal. Sheesh.

This is from Al Lutz at Mice Age. Here's a link to the full report, although the rest is all about DL.

This sounds like exactly the sort of thing we have all been calling for for a few years now. Leave it to TDO to find a way to screw it up.

Man what a big thing this would be! But truthfully I doubt we see anything remotely like this until after Avatarland

I am not an Avatar hater, but I would take a DHS make-over over Avland any day.

Of course, by the time TDO is done with it, it'll take 6 years to build, consist primarily of meet and greets and include a water play area as one of the main features. At the cost of an existing ride, of course.

Oh I agree! I am far from an Avatar hater but would def like to see this first!

But ditto, it will be a LONG time coming when this happens

What I'm afraid of is that TDO will marginalize everything and scale down all of West Coast ideas to the point that TDA will throw their hands up and say "you know, just forget it. This is pointless!"' If TDO is that unwilling to innovate, even on the coat tails of their own people, then it's a bleak proposition. But, I'm forever the optimist and maybe someone with common sense, vision and authority will intervene.

Board Insiders: now is the time to comment. Please.

(...before this thread turns into yet another "OH NOS! AVATAR!" thread or another example of the "I know 378 people already posted here saying they would be excited about this development so, hey, what's one more?!" thread drownings that occurs here far too often. Or both.)

Most of WDW really needs the DCA treatment!

Magic Kingdom is partly getting it with FLE (theming), but it would be good to still get a new proper E-Ticket somewhere!

Epcot needs DCA level of money spent on Wonders of Life/Imagination/Energy and World Showcase attractions, on top of Test Track!

DAK could really do with at least a couple more lands, some more rides , and a nighttime show!

DTD could do with some actual nightlife (or some nightlife built elsewhere in WDW), less empty buildings, etc. (although this may actually be happening according to people on here)

Both water parks could do with an additional attraction each!

DHS really needs the DCA treatment - remove the hat, cohesive theming, build new rides, upgrade Fantasmic, etc.!
Even if not brand new, there are various attractions at other Disney resorts that would fit in DHS...
  • Animagique,
  • Armageddon– The Special Effects,
  • CinéMagique,
  • Crush’s Coaster,
  • GlowFest/ElecTRONica/Mad T Party Inspired Nightime Event,
  • Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye,
  • Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue!,
  • Monsters, Inc. Ride & Go Seek,
  • Radiator Springs Racers ,
  • Ratatouille Ride,
  • Stitch Encounter/Stitch Live,
  • Toontown
Even in parks within WDW itself, there are attractions that would fit better in DHS than where they currently are...
  • Captain EO!,
  • Comedy Warehouse,
  • Mickey’s PhilharMagic,
  • Monster’s Inc. Laugh Floor Comedy Club,
  • Stitch’s Great Escape,
  • The Magic Carpets of Aladdin
Even just moving the 6 attractions I've just mentioned from wherever they are to DHS would increase capacity and make some people happy, and that probably wouldn't cost hundreds of millions to do!

Well, first FLE has to be fiscally accounteneered over three years, 2012, 13, 14. Then marketed. Next, Avatarland opens in 2016 and 2017. Probably there will be another lull of one year for the marketing campaing to focus on what's new and what's to come ('Celebrate a year of a million Avatars' / 'What Avatar will YOU celebrate?'). So it looks DHS will get its make-over in 2019, 2020 and 2021. Just in time for WDW's 50th then.

I think we'll see many closures over the next few years in the Studios. This to reduce costs, to make the suits appear to have overseen an expansion while still keeping costs down. Then the make-over reclamation will be sold as an expansion, even though the DHS of 2021, when the expansion is complete, will actually have less attractions than MGM in 2001 did.

I predict the main expansion will be 'Carsland 2'. This will consist of redoing the LMA show with a Cars overlay, presented as 'state-of-the-art stunt show with Disney storytelling techniques!'. Seating in LMA will be reduced to make way for a Cars giftshop, and most of the remaining good seats will be going to people who bought the 'stunt show dinner package' at 50's Prime Time.

I feel like HS really needs this the most. I dunno about others, but I feel like this is the least fun park. Unless you like to see show after show, you don't have a whole lot going on. I have wishful thinking that maybe they'd bring Electronica or something Tron related over... :p

The timing of this is great. 2013-2015 or 2014-2016 for an opening window will potentially allow the following:
Fantasyland/Seven Dwarf's Mine Train: End of 2013
DHS Changes: 2014-2016
World of Avatar: 2016-2017

Add in the fact that once Fantasyland opens, it makes a few more Hollywood Studios attractions (Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast) redundant. I could see the rumored Tangled show replacing Beauty and the Beast, a major re-working of the Animation Courtyard, an expansion to Pixar Place and something else to unify Echo Lake to the backlot (Muppet Studios/Lucasland).

Based on Iger and Rasulo's comments to investors, I don't think anything like DCA is even remotely on the horizon.
