DHS Security guard suggesting tripod ban might be coming

I just had a security guard at DHS tell me that they are trying to decide if they are going to still allow tripods in the parks. He stated that it was a 'new policy'.

I'm hoping he was just confused but curious if anyone else has seen or heard anything like this recently.

That's sort of what I was hoping but I also would not be surprised if the whole tripod topic got opened up again with all the 'selfie-stick' dialog recently. I"m going with the confused or new CM theory right now but definitely need to keep an eye on this topic.

That would be a horrible ban if it is nothing more than a knee-jerk reaction to the selfie-sticks.

I think he is confused. Most of the discussion lately is in regards to an upcoming full selfie stick ban (At this point I'm told they are holding out to see how bad it gets for the first few weeks of the summer tourist season before making any moves). I was told a while ago that they were looking into banning all types of camera accessories (tripods included) but that was quickly dismissed (If I am correct, they tried banning them at Disneyland a while ago and it didnt go over well).

Side Note: I did see someone get the boot from the park yesterday for using a professional size/quality video camera in the parks filming for his "up and coming vacation vlog". My concern is this...how did he even get IN the parks with it in the first place? Those things are NOT small.

Not to go all hyperbolic but it would probably mean me canceling my two annual passes (not that they really care about 2 APs anyways). My gf hardly cares to go much anymore so I only really keep them to do photography and the occasional trip with her but it's so sparse it's not worth it.

have no idea what make/model it is but maybe it all breaks down so it was just parts? although he doesn't have a backpack so not sure what he carried it around with but that's all i can think of

If its the cam I think it is (panasonic ag-ac series) then it doesn't fold up at all. These cameras are typically used for professional on-location types of shots..and tho you can't see it on his shirt he was advertising for his personal vlog.

And before anyone assumes he was working on assignment for Disney...just remember that when THEY are doing something, they typically don't send anyone out alone..there would be assistants.

From what I saw...they approached him because he was filming candid video with random guests. A bit of conversation commenced, and then they walked him towards the entrance of the park. I assume they werent ok with whatever we was filming with professional equipment.

I didnt see everything that went down, but heard from a friend who said he was escorted outside the gate.

It is not surprising. After that clandestine movie that was shot on their property and released without their consent, I fully expect them to be more vigilant about any possibility that someone might do that again.

I'm actually surprised that you're so surprised he made it through security. Surely you've seen all of the foreign guests with the massive semi-pro Panasonic and Sony cameras. It's not unusual to see at least two of those a day when I'm at the parks during the summer months, always being carried by foreign (usually South American) guests. It was probably the talking to other guests on camera that caught their attention.

It was probably the interaction with guests that got him in trouble. When going from selfie blog to interviewing guests you change the dynamic. I've never had a hard time getting things through security if I didn't carry a bag in. Not saying I've brought anything into the park that I shouldn't have just that no one seems to really check.

Wait for a group of people entering through the non bag line and hold the camera out of site. Once through the entrance your fine.
